"..limiting critical thinking and reading books."

I agree that a lot of people waste a lot of time on games and what not online, but it has the good to be an infinite learning tool and resource as well, and who's to say they aren't reading books online and engaging in critical thought using social media? Besides, our parents bemoaned video games, and theirs bemoaned television, and theirs the ball point pen. Only the medium changes -- the bemoaning does not.

I have always admired and respected Suu Kyi and her story.

Great lady but her time came to late. She should have been in charged 30 yrs ago. Now she is an anachronism of the past century. It's likely she doesn't even get that it's 'youth losing time online' that gave weight to her fight against the junta and even protected her life during years of captivity.

Yep, too bad the youth are playing games online rather than brutalizing the Rohinga, eh?

As a person who "wastes a lot of time online and playing video games" I have to say that they can be quite useful. As with any form of entertainment, the quality of what you choose to engage with is far more important than the medium itself.

With the internet, the news I read is always up to date and because I play a particular online MMO with my wife I have learned basic Japanese.

That said, I could also be reading trashy novels that provide absolutely no value beyond entertainment.

Even moreover, the medium of the book itself is becoming less and less relevant- I'll always love me some books..but is a school library necessary in a country where youth have access to smartphones? PDFs of certain books A) eliminates a LOT of work maintaining a library (staff, organizing, space) and B) allows unlimited "rental time" and copies of a particular book.

FINALLY, having access to things like smart phones if nothing else will certainly expand ones creativity. There are so many apps for drawing, programming, writing and/or collaborating with peers.. etc. Don't need any special supplies beyond the phone itself.

She was right. Burmese youths spent more times on social network and playing game more than Japanese youths even Internet still expensive in Burma. If they go to online for learning and study something and then it will be good for them. However, I saw most of Burmese peoples are using smart phone and spending time on Face-book and playing Candy Crush games. You can see those youths playing with their small smartphone in tea shop and even in market. I believe Aung San Su Kyi wants Burmese youths to learn and study something when they were on Internet instead of spending times on face-book and playing games.

Burmese peoples and the world should not expect rapidly change in Burma. Daw Aung San Su Kyi is facing many difficulties and she needs to engage in very cleaver and patient with former dictator gen Than Shwe because he is still controlling the Military and USDP. Former dictator Gen Than Shwe was known as ruthless and dirty General and he still has power to remove Defense Chief Gen Min Aung Haling and replace with his loyal General. NLD and Daw Aung San Su Kyi can not afford another Military coup in Burma and they need to avoid confrontation with Military especially former dictatorship Gen Than Shwe. NLD and Burmese peoples have to some scarify for initiated changing in Burma. I have read some RAF reporter criticizing NLD for its media relationship and I found some Journalists do not understand current situation of NLD Party.

Some journalists in Burma have though they are freed now and they can ask and write whatever they wanted. In reality, there’s still too early to say power transition will be successful or not because Burmese Military can coup anytime by creating unstable in Burma. Burmese peoples and International communities should be aware of former dictator Gen Than Shwe was ruthless and dirty person. Than Shwe can not be trusted and no one is safe as long as he alive.
