Define 'if provoked'. Anyway, if NKorea launched any military action it sure wouldn't be 'thousand-fold' for very long, though the world would lose a thousand-fold more than NK (particularly since Kim is going anyway). Anyway, needless to say it would be the end of the end for their regime if NK tried anything. It would be an utter atrocity, of course, if they did.
As usual, wait it out and let cool heads prevail.

As I wrote on a previous thread, sooner or later North Korea is going to push the wrong button when making such ludicrous and inflammatory comments.
Make no mistake, although the US military has had its problems fighting low-intensity wars in places like Iraq and Afghanistan (mainly because the enemy don't drive T72 battle tanks), it would be more than capable of filleting North Korea if any act of aggression was tried by Elvis in Pyongyang.

North Korea knows full well that the US and its allies are not plotting against it militarily (in other ways - hell yes). The North knows that they don
t have the stomach for another war in Korea. Kim-ill-suited-for-power also knows that if he starts anything itll all be over quickly, and the outcome wont be pretty for him and his lapdogs. The north simply doesnt have the resources to prosecute a war.Which means, all this is the same blow-hard rehtoric we
ve always heard from the diminutive dictator. Hes chucking a tantrum to get more candy to shut him up.0

It's Kim's move. We will not attack on the basis of words. But like others have said if he takes any action against another state it would be lights out for N. Korea. I think China is seeing us as less of a threat; especially with the improved relations with Taiwan. The end result is that China is fed up with Kim. I do think China has a concern for the Korean's welfare and not only do not want them harmed militarily but also do not want to see them starving from sanctions.
Hopefully we can just maintain a policy of live and let die.
We will continue on with our lives and Kim will eventually die.

and Kim will eventually die
But will he? With that hair and those jumpsuits, maybe a move to Vegas is on the cards for the "King," sorry the "Dear Leader."

Kim: "Whine whine whine whine whine!"
When will the world learn to ignore the tiny dictator with the childlike need to be acknowledged? He's not stupid enough to attack anyone else.

If he's thinking the response would be similar to the U.S.'s response to Afghanistan or Iraq, then he's gravely mistaken. His country has nuclear weapons so any response to an actual act of aggression on his part would be fast, thorough, and overwhelming. No concern will be spared for civilians. North Korea would become a huge parking lot between South Korea and China.

Ah, the rhetoric of another age. Curtis LeMay during the Korean War. It is good to see that somebody still remembers the classics.

A thousand-fold sounds a little Dr. Evil-esque, next Kim should demand a quazillion dollars.

"Ah, the rhetoric of another age. Curtis LeMay during the Korean War. It is good to see that somebody still remembers the classics."
True, but lest we forget the parking lot would extend through Seoul, capital of one of the largest economies in Asia (not the largest by any means, of course, but an important city).

I'm with you. I don't hope for anyone's death by any means, but I think waiting it out is a better alternative than going to war.

If N Korea launches any military strike, it will suffer the mother of all beatings.

It's like really bad writing from a cheap movie. I mean if you had a character and you wanted to make fun of him with a really bad accent and really cryptic English, this is exactly how I'd write it.

NK maybe in the infancy of developing a nuke but they are unable to mount a "1000 fold response" More sabor rattling from looney Kim and his goon squad.

1000 fold response? Is that all they got? Come on now, why not a million fold response? Or at least 100000? Measly thousand fold, what a wuss. Bring it on lil Kim!

Kim's been beating his chest so hard he's bruising.
But really, I think he wishes he could have an excuse to retaliate against the mighty US and go out in a blaze of glory.
With his tv stations passing along the US and allies threats to the NK people, at least his version. And his threats of retaliation. Kim's the protector of NK. < :-)

"A thousand-fold sounds a little Dr. Evil-esque..."
Are you implying that Kim Jong Un is a mini Dear Leader?
To the point, NK has demonstrated that they have a working nuke. They have a history of exporting weapons secretly and also of using terrorism (blowing up air liners, etc.) as a tool of statecraft. That puts the neighbors in an ackward position. Does the next missile test have a warhead that "accidentally" lands on Okinawa? Perhaps a nuke gets shipped to al Quaida? This has become a problem that has to be addressed. Now the Ill regime is threatening war if "provoked." Will stopping their next ICBM be provocation? How about stopping a ship for inspection?
NK might not last long in an all out war but they will get to Seoul and wreck the SK economy. They might get a nuke to Japan when they realize that they are going to loose. Then what?
China has to take these fools out before they do start a war.

There seems to be a duality of thinking here that reasons that Kim Jong Il is both a spoilt lunatic child while also being intelligent enough to know not to go too far with his threats. He is either the mad “Elvis” or the devious blackmailer. I don’t for a moment doubt that he is quite mad, which isn’t too surprising given that he has been surrounded by “yes-men” all his life that are too frightened to tell him anything he wouldn’t want to hear. Which might also go part way to explaining his lack of dress sense. Is this laughable image enough that we shouldn’t feel a degree of fear as to what he is potentially capable of doing? It would be easy to reason that his hothouse isolation leaves him with no real idea of the world. I wonder how many here would feel confident enough given the opportunity to walk up him and tell him how deranged his thinking is? I wouldn’t like that job.
Part of the reason Iraq was so easily set up to be invaded was because Sadam Hussein had claimed to have or want to have weapons of mass destruction, when he later said this wasn’t true it was too late for anybody to believe him. Kim Jong Il however does have nuclear weapons and is close to having the means to mount those weapons on rockets. But because of the legacy of Iraq some now have the fear to move too soon and make the same mistake. We now have the wait and see people, once (or more) burned, twice shy. In the meantime those nuclear weapons are getting smaller in size & bigger in bang, those rockets are flying greater distances and will in time carry those nice little nuclear weapons. At which point it will all be too late for some city (cities), is that what it will take for people to stop taking this madman as a comic?

This dictator's read one too many Dragon Ball Z comics.

China is the only reason he hasn't been dealt with already, so China should take responsibility for making sure he's "de-clawed". I'm not holding my breath.

He'd be a lot easier to ignore if he didn't have nukes capable of wiping out a couple of million people.
0
pawatan
I'm not convinced he does. Have you read the articles suggesting both tests could have been faked with conventional explosives?
The US has tested a conventional explosive bomb of similar yield to the last 'nuclear' test. It's much easier to fake a bomb than actually build one.

Obama said the U.S. is more than willing to negotiate with North Korea to bring peace on the Korean peninsula
That was just a delaying tactic! If the US troops retreated out of Iraq, they will be send to the Korean peninsula and that will be Obama's turn to kick around!

dragonczar
North Korea better roaring their guns as fast as they can, otherwise the US troops retreated out of the Korean peninsula will be too late to bargain something from the table!

How can you measure that? It doesn't make sense unless US or its ally makes an opening gambit.
