The violence has cast a pall over a city preparing to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

Chavs, now the majority, are obviously demanding new events be introduced.

This is largely a race riot, but I guess that phrase has fallen out of favor.

Coppers trying to arrest an armed criminal drug dealing gang memberr who fired at the coppers reading other news and info sites, they retalitated killing the gunman. The scum use that as an excuse to go off. Watch out London there is a ton of disgruntled scum living amongst you lot.

    Armed?

    Cops and crims?

I did a search and found 'petrol bombs' have been used.

Its obviously no longer the country some of the long-term Brits who come with all kinds of snark to threads about gun crime in America imagine it to be.

Oh. And that makes you feel better?

BV; Doesn't make me feel better or worse just stating latest reports on news. This is nothing compared to riots that happend in 70's or 80's. Often happens in UK in summer when hot.

Are you sure about that? It's now a 3rd night of fires, looting and violence taking place in a dozen or so locations as far away as Birmingham.

JeffLee; Certainly sure. Those riots had many deaths were more widespread and lasted for a long time. They were race riots due to gripes with police stop and search policies. There was also a growth in the NF at the time and massive battles between them and the ANL that caused many seruious injuries and deaths at the time. There were even riots within the Asian communtity and teh death of Blair Peach by Met police amde matters worth. The 70's and 80's were riots targetting the police, not concentrating on looting. This is no comparison.

Steve, the current riots, which are reportedly spreading and intensifying as I write, are not "concentrated on looting." Looting is one of several facets, including violent street confrontations against police by mainly young minority men.

You say "many deaths." How many? The Wiki article titled "1981 England riots" doesn't mention any, though it mentions injuries.

JeffLee; the riots were a build up of tensiosn taht began with the popularity of the NF starting in the late sixties and teh approval by many of the Enoch Powell Rivers of Bolld speech that lost him his position. I am taliing about riots that escatlated through the late 70'sand peaked in the mid 80's. These are what we would call these days race riots.

A rise in the extreme right and a divide in society over immigrants was the cause. The fact is that the riots were supported by mainstream politicians mostly on the Labour side and many in the media. unlike these opportuinsit type looting now, these were riots of mostly political meaning. In Brixton the main annoyance was the mEt police use of stop and search which antagonised the youth of teh area. Railton Road was known in the press as the front line. The riots went on for years, as usual during the summer as they mostly have done in Britian.

There were deaths and hundreds of serious injuries caused by teh riots , Blair Peach in Southall is one and PC Blakelock in Tottenham is another, though his was a few years later, but the rioters had mostly the same beliefs.

The riots spread to much of the UK, all places though were high immigrant areas. The riots made the goverbemnt change policing policies for the whole nation. T
