Yup, I believe the police when they say that a previous incident had not influence on this situation.

I remembered a report mentioned there's more than one thousand murder victims yearly in New York, it must be difficult for both police and resident over there.

First, one should always freeze when a uniformed police officer requests it. I hope any investigation shows Browne was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. RIP.

Second, there were about 866 murders in New York last year. In 2009, there were 781 murders, the lowest since 1965. Not 'more than one thousand'. Still, one is too many.

Surely he knew the police had arrived when he grabbed that gun. A very poor move.

But I do not feel especially inclined to believe the police actually gave him time to drop the gun. I could yell "Put it down!" twice and then fire off a shot in 2 seconds flat. It does not mean I gave you time to react.

I can only hope I am wrong about the police and the truth is learned either way. But everyone who owns a gun should take careful note of this story. It is another fine example of how a gun did not protect its owner. A fine example among many.

"Cop shoots black man in his home" would be a more succient headline, bet a white home owner would get more time to "freeze". Now a 7 yr old boy has no father. tragic!

If all that is told in the story is true to a T, then it sounds like tragically bad timing.

Shoot to the leg or foot so they get the point don't just waste people because the don't freeze in their tracks.

This sounds to me like the cops panicked and maybe this dude was high on weed?? If you have ever been stoned out of your brains you know what ever anybody says won't register. RIP dead brother so bloody sad!!

I think the first post sums it up perfectly.

A cop recently got shot, they over-reacted and shot a bloke in who was in all fairness waiving a .38 revolver.

Shoot to the leg or foot

Right. Shoot the leg or foot in the dark. Except lets imagine they tried this and it took four shots to actually get one hit and that hit passed through the leg. And one of those four bullets went on to kill a child. And I bet you would be there, posting how those dumb cops should have just wasted that fool who could hear the sirens and see the patrol car lights before he ever stepped out the door with gun in hand.

Or maybe they should just shoot the gun out of his hand and angle the richochet just right so that a buddy cop can catch the bullet in his teeth?

Face it. Once the trigger is pulled their are happy choices. Even a waning shot in the air can comedown and kill someone. Since the man with the gun in his hand is partly master of his own doom, it makes sense to shoot him in the chest if a bullet is fired. The only real point of contention is if the police gave him time to put the gun down before shooting.

We can all sit here in front of our PCs and say they should have done this or they should have done that, but at the end of the day, just one wrong move by the cops and they will be 6 feet under, right?? Easy to say, they panicked, were edgy etc..but the USA ain't no Japan, anybody and everybody may have a gun, may be high on some kind of illegal narcotics, etc..not a good combination, right?? Should we believe these cops and their version of events?? I think they will have an internal investigation and hopefully come up with the truth. If I know the USA, I would not be surprised if the so called burglars needed to steal stuff to sell then buy drugs or if this place already had drugs and they were just looking for their next fix??

Only one time when I was around 19 years old the police broke down the door to the place I was living because they mistakenly went into the wrong apartment (it was the top floor apartment) and I didn't know what was going on except the front door came crashing down and 3 officers were in the door with guns drawn saying for me to freeze. Now I must admit I didn't have any weapons in my hands so my situation was a lot more favorable than this poor mans. To make a long story short, when you have guns trained on you your body kicks into survival mode and you get the "time slows down" effect to quickly assess how to get out of the situation alive.

If the NYPD was telling the truth (it can easily be fabricated with how this is sounding) then that man should have been able to drop the weapon in an exremely short time after seeing guns aimed at him by multiple officers, unless he was drunk or under influence of something... or maybe just plain groggy from sleep. Even then the brain usually forces the body to kick into shape when one's life is in danger, so it is very hard for me to believe that they did give this man enough time to drop his weapon. Doesn't say anything that he tried aiming at them so it smacks of a lie.
