    "taxpayer refunds from the IRS"

What's up with that? Why have some people paid too much tax in the first place?

    Paid too much on witholding.

US gov't is at a huge turning point. It all boils down to running out of money.

Here's the only problem I'm really having with the Republicans... They're screaming about government spending being out of control and how the deficit is killing the country, yet THEY are to ones who took the budget surplus Bush Jr. was handed and almost immediately turned it into a deficit again. Now the great Republican plan for the budget calls for reducing spending (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) yet ALSO calls for tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy. Newsflash guys... If your income currently isn't matching or greater than your expenses, the solution DOESN'T INVOLVE FURTHER REDUCING YOUR INCOME!!!! You calculate that the reductions in spending will negate the effect of the reductions in income, yet the country is heavily in debt from 8 years of Bush Jr. and his war to avenge daddy in Iraq. It's going to require DECADES of running the country at a surplus to dig it out of this hole the politicians have dug in only 11 years. The Republicans obviously Just. Don't. Get. It. (or more likely they just don't care and are willing to pass the buck on down to our grandchildren.)

Payroll withholding. Employers take X dollars from every paycheck based on what the employee tells them to take out according to their family situation. Most people err on the side of caution and have a little more taken out than is actually needed in case there is a status change during the year that will increase the tax owed. The extra is returned in the Spring when the previous year's tax forms are submitted.

It actually was not the wars that put America in to debt in 2007 and it was not Bush it was the Democrats in Congress and Bush signed their budget as an act of bipartisanship.

America also never had any actual surplus, that is fiction it had projected surpluses in like 10 or 20 years. That is on foreign and American debt holders alone. Our Government actually owes more to the tune of 100 trillion dollars in total obligations.

I may be a bit slow but doesn't increasing your taxes actually reduce your actual income? The money you actually have to spend for yourself to live instead of forking over to the Govt instead so they can spend as they see fit?

How can the US government "run out of money"?? This is a bunch of BS from our amigos in the REPUBLICAN Party and the Tea Party. America can print and print all the $$$ it wants! We have 2 major wars costing billions and billions of $$$ each day, maybe it is time to pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan??

Actually social program spending dwarfs all military spending combined. Period. Congress spent more money on TARP alone and the Stimulus Package alone then both wars for 10 years combined costed.

Just printing money is how you ruin your economy, its what all failed states do when they go broke.

I just love how people can still go back to the numbers blame game, blaming republicans or democrats for their problems. Why can't anyone just admit that as a whole, the US Government on both sides spends WAY too much money and we ALL need to cut back? This did not become a problem in the last 15 years, this has been creeping up on the USA for decades and both sides are responsible.

mostly agree, except that 1) Clinton was handed the surplus too (it's called the internet bubble, and had nothing to do with the administration), and 2) Democrats helped the GOP pile on the debt.

    It was a 2-party sham.

Gov wants this shutdown to show the populace they have control over the slaves. -Expect those public parks for the Cherry Blossom Festival to be shut down for "insurance/security reasons"

=even if you are a non-paid volunteer you should be getting a letter in the mail saying to support this shutdown and not show up (your activity is covered by Gov insurance). The letters are already in the mail so you should expect this shutdown to happen. =Plan your activities around this especially if in the Washington area.

I'm all for a gov't shutdown. For as many years as it takes for Americans to get some sense. I would guess if the government shut down for just 2 or 3 years, the US could once again be leading the world,

Yanee is right, the only difference between the republicans and the democrats is who gets the money from the government.

Taxes, fees, and property assessments (on which some taxes are based) are going up all the time. The only way the government is going to be able to reduce spending (and taxes, maybe) is to reduce the entitlement programs: social security, medicare, & medicade. That will cause howls from the elderly especially. And, since the elderly tend to vote, the politicians who do such a thing will not be re-elected. Then there's the subsidies for corporations, who are large doners to both sides. At least that's the theory. But now the government is out of cash. Will a crisis inspire courage?

As far as printing more money goes that would just lead to more inflation and reduce the value of US debt held by foreign governments. The Chinese have already warned that they would not be impressed with such a move. The US treasury now kowtows to Beijing on that account. How times have changed.

Other than a consummation devoutly to be wished, that is. Well, since the government lies as its everyday MO, you can know, first of all, that a government shutdown is not a government shutdown. The bombing and conquering doesn't stop, for example. The dictator on his own say-so funds the essential work of government: killing, looting, spying etc. He has the Fed at his command, too. The non-essential employees are sent home for an unpaid vacation, to be changed into a paid vacation when the shutdown shuts down. There are a few things that are also shuttered like the propaganda museums and monuments. But otherwise, nothing happens. It is just more of the Republican - Democratic political theater. Unfortunately, the truth is that no matter who wins this current battle government debt is going to continue to soar. The bonehead Obama administration with no leadership is projecting that the deficit for this year will be 1.6 trillion dollars. Even if you were to cut $100 billion from that number it would barely make a dent. The U.S. financial system is dying, and nothing that the Republican or the Democrats are doing right now is going to change that. The more they promise to get spending under control, the more money they seem to waste with so many members of the Congress constantly entangled in controversy. So is the government brimming with idiots, incompetents, and incredibly corrupt politicians? Has it gotten to the point where the system of government has become so corrupted that it is impossible to repair therefore is it the end of the American Dream?

And Dems think it will be against Republicans. The problem is, Republicans have done their job. They've passed a stopgap spending bill, they've passed budget items, but the Senate Dems refuse to act on them, and the President threatens a veto.
