Jacob Stolt-Nielsen is of course correct.

But just as of course, he is totally politically incorrect, and political correctness rules. So, he will poo-pooed, and the Somali pirates will continue to be coddled.

Glad someone has the right idea. Things would get a lot scarier if bulk freighters began firing a ma deuce at those little boats.

Piracy attacks off Somalia began in retaliation for illegal shiping off the coast.....

FYI - Somalia piracy began in retaliation for illegal FISHING off the coast Somalia.

Somalia pirates are presently being killed by the various naval warships protecting shiping. Stolt-Nielsen is suggesting that more or all of the pirates should be executed for piracy when they are caught in the act.

Have the pirates threatened to murder their valuable hostages to stop the killing of their worthless bretheren?

This guy should be put in charge of dealing with the problem.

Ships should have 50mm deck guns and soldiers should be on board to man them.

Jacqueline Smith, president of the Norwegian Seafarers Union, described Stolt-Nielsen’s views as “barbaric” and said killing pirates could endanger the 700 seafarers now held as hostages in Somalia.

Wrong lady You are the problem treating problems with kid gloves does not make them go away. Typical liberal thinking. "The poor poor pirates who steal ships have rights!!"

Stolt-Nielsen acknowledged that killing pirates could trigger a backlash against crews held hostage. “But you can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs. This is war and warfare costs lives,” he wrote.

He is correct. Better to allow these pirates to be sunk to the bottom and no aide given.

Halima Hassan, a sister of one of the dead pirates, said her brother was innocent and was killed as he was guarding the coast “from illegal fishing vessels.”

I guess he didn't protect Somalia well enough from the "fishermen" who took him out.

Lady what you say is fine but do you realize that what the pirates do is worse than barbaric? In your world of high moral standards, how come the other seafarers are forgotten?

If the government of Somalia cannot contain their citizens, what would happen if all Somalian passport holders are treated stringently at the airports? Would the government start taking the matter seriously?

WilliB, spot on! no need to discuss this further!

Sink the pirates boats and execute the pirates they have no rights now they became pirates

I see that people's lives dont have the same value in this world. Why not? They are just somalians.

Vessels from Korea and Taiwan fish illegally in Somalian waters and what is being done about that? If Somali resources are being stolen by foreigners, who can complain when they retaliate?

The anti-piracy vessels should also be charged with putting a stop to illegal fishing so that Somalis have a legitimate way to make a living.

All Norway ships should have harpoons and declare open season on all Pirates.

↑ Thank you!

In a country where there is no effective government, nothing better to do except becoming pirates: playing with deaths and reaping very large rewards..this way of life easily become a dream way of life for young man in Somalia ,no doubt. You can kill some but will not stop the problem . I remember ,after SK Navy killed them, they vowed to kill SK ship's crews if captured from then on.

Piracy is flourishing multimillion dollar industry. You can't treat them with kidgloves. Jacob Stolt-Nielsen is right. Catch the pirates and punish them on the spot. Why fly them to wherever, give them lawyers, try them, put them in prison, provide them with food, shelter, medical access and all courtesy of the taxpayers who are struggling enough as it is.

Well normally you'd be cautious about this since you'd want proof and a trial and safeguards from abuse, but until there's a case where an armed speedboat approaches a ship and it's not a pirate looking to do harm, I'm willing to agree with the shipper.

Scrote: Vessels from Korea and Taiwan fish illegally in Somalian waters and what is being done about that? If Somali resources are being stolen by foreigners, who can complain when they retaliate?

There isn't too much illegal fishing these days. The fishing boats just don't think it's worth the risk. Does that stop the pirates from taking other boats? Nope. It's about the money.

The pirates commit numerous violent crimes even before they hijack cargo ships. Hundreds of Yemeni dhows have been hijacked by the pirates, with crews often killed or tossed overboard.

Those dhows are then used as low-profile stalking and surveillance ships that relay information to speedboats. This is not a peaceful enterprise. The main victims of piracy are local Yemeni fisherman along with impoverished workers at ports like Mombasa who are now unemployed since no one wants to dock there anymore.

The pirates have thus far refused to share any of the proceeds from their ransoms with these victims of their crimes.

The existing hostages are, unfortunately, as good as dead.

its a war and should be treated as such.

The pirates never kill anyone. It is against their code. Give them jobs to protect ships.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Agree with Goddog.

Killing will only bring down the heat on them harder, most criminals are not out to kill people.

Ditto for muggers, thieves, etc why kill someone when you can rob him over and over again = poor prospect for them.

I'm with you until you say they are "coddled". I guess if you count the ones that were shot by special forces as "coddled" or the one sentenced to decades in prison as "coddled" you may have a point. I think "still living in Somalia" excludes you from the ranks of "coddled".

Personally I am all in favor of a ship's captain being able to defend his ship from violent criminals even including using deadly force, but I don't think that applying accepted standards of justice and human rights qualifies as "coddling" a criminal. It's more like "acting civilized".

Smorkian:

I was referring to the captured pirates who are brought to Europe, given a lenient sentence in civilized, Western court system, and then granted permanent asylum for themselves and their extended clans because we can not send the poor creatures back to Somalia. I call that coddling, because it is. It certainly is no deterrent of any kind.

I guess you haven´t read the previous threads we had about this topic.

Sounds like coddling, I would agree.

Nope, not a one.

I see that people's lives dont have the same value in this world. Why not? They are just somalians.

They are the ones who attack people first. It's nothing to do with them being "just Somalians". They are criminals who put peoples lives in danger.

The pirates never kill anyone. It is against their code. Give them jobs to protect ships.

This isn't a Disney movie. I doubt they have "a code". And who would they be protecting the ships from? Their friends? The ships wouldn't need protecting if there were no pirates.

Killing will only bring down the heat on them harder,

Why will it "only bring down the heat on them harder"? If they are dead, they are dead. It will serve as a warning to others. Or will they come back as pirate ghosts or something?

most criminals are not out to kill people

Most criminals don't bring machine guns and rocket launchers with them either. Or are you saying you think that what they are doing is right because you don't think that they are "out to kill people"? Despite the fact that they take hostages and threaten to kill them? The only ones who are violating human rights are the pirates.

I can't believe people are saying that what this guy said is wrong! If you don't want to get killed, don't be a pirate. We shouldn't be feeling sorry for criminals.

I love this old Viking! But he should not say this in PUBLIC, but you know, just do it out at sea, and as that old US navy saying goes, what happens at sea, stays out at sea, and you can get the rest of the picture. Go Norwegian Viking old man Go!

Bring back the "Q" ships!!!

Read up on what happened on board the Maersk Alabama. The ringleader of the group of pirates that attacked the vessel was sentenced to 33 years in prison in the US. This is what the judge said:

*US District Judge Loretta Preska described the pirates as sadists, noting they had subjected Capt Richard Phillips to a mock execution.

"They appeared to relish even their most depraved acts of physical and psychological violence," she said.

Before she announced the sentence, Maersk Alabama crew member Colin Wright told the court he was "not the same person I used to be and I never will be".

*

Pirates have forfeited all their rights. They did so when they became pirates. Nothing poor Somalis. They do not deserve any kind of leniency.

Somalia pirates are now thought to have link with overseas organized crimes who supply them weapons , accurate information of ships and share " profits".

tclh.

Been pretty obvious for some time that the guys running the show and making the big bucks are not Somali but people from other countries working through local contacts.

Deal with those doing the (dirty) work in the fields, the pirates, swiftly and ruthlessly, if necessary, and the ones behind the scenes will see their spoils dry up. Piracy on the high sees has always been punishable by death, not even talking about hostage taking, cruelty and distortion, and that's the way it should stay. It is an outrage that individual countries are loath to properly protect their vessels, rather the people who man them, deal with piracy under the pretense it will put crews at risk. The opposite is true. The pirates become bolder all the time. The lack of a firm attitude creates more and more outlaws feeding a network of terrorists.

Wah wah the poor Somalians . The insane political correctness that so many cultural marxists try to enforce on the rest of us is no good beyond your shores. Deal with it.

Pay any blackmailer once and you will go on and on paying, with the “price” creeping up all the time.

Anybody that sees piracy as a good career move needs to read the job description and that job description needs to include the warning that they might at some point get a big hole blown in their head or be left out at sea to swim a few hundred miles to the nearest land. If the applicant accepts these conditions of employment then fine. Become a pirate.

As much as we all agree that the world does need human rights there must be a point where the rights of the victims take priority over the rights of the victimiser. And as much as they may claim to be, the Somalis are not the victims here, the crews of those ships take priority and have a right to real protection.

“Halima Hassan, a sister of one of the dead pirates, said her brother was innocent and was killed as he was guarding the coast “from illegal fishing vessels.”

Since when did bulk chemical carriers take time out to do a little fishing?

I agree with this guy 100%: stop being wusses with these cut-throats.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If they were airplane pirates (i.e. hijackers), guards wouldn't hesitate to shoot them. Of course, if the cargo is oil and the pirates have rocket launchers, that does make it trickier to stop them but I guess they actually have to get on board the ship in order to hijack it so put a couple of well-armed, well-trained Steven Seagal-types on each ship.....problem solved!

I bet if the means to protect themselves was more "barbaric", there wouldn't be 700 hostages right now!
