WHERE is Sea Shepard ?... Oh, i forgot.... the cowards only mess with the Japanese because the Japanese take their abuse... unlike the people from Iceland etc

no ones eating it in norway,no ones eating it in japan..public have spoken

BigbOy69 - No, its not cause the Japanese 'take their' abuse, infact they fight Sea Shepard pretty dam hard. It's because sea Shepard primarily defend Australian and new zealand waters. I have said it many times, if japan whaled exclusively in the northern hemisphere Australians wouldn't care.

I must have missed the statement from the Australian and New Zealand governments saying that Sea Shepherd was protecting their waters. I must also have missed the statement from the Sea Shepherd saying the same.

I do remember Paul Watson being sentenced in absentia in a Norwegian court though for scuttling a Norwegian boat.

Seems pretty obvious why they aren't in Norway and it has nothing to do with either Australia or New Zealand.

Where are all the self-important "activists" parading their consciences - sorry - protesting this slaughter?

2 ( +6 / -4 )

stressing that the problem was “to sell the meat.”

They're going out to sea in rough conditions to kill animals for meat that they can't sell?

What is the point? Or are Norwegian whalers as fixated on making the same mistakes over and over regardless as the Japanese whalers are?

“The quota depends on (scientific) recommendations, and it is at a minimum already. The Minke population is quite big,”

Translation = We're taking them because we can, not because there's any rational reason to or even because there's a quick buck in it, cos there isn't. So there, sucks boo to you.

Obviously consumption of whale meat has an adverse effect on cognitive skills.

Oh, im so sorry, I must have missed the part where I stated any of that aswell. If you want to re-read my comment i clearly say Australians and New zealands.. not Sea Shepard OR the Australian Government. Take your word twisting elsewhere.

We all know if Australian and New Zealnd people lost their interest in the Japanese whaling Sea Shepard would lose a large amount of funding. You shouldn't start arguments for the sake of arguing. I never once said "exclusively defending" in my comment. I said 'primarily' cause Australia and new zealand citizens give sea shepard lots of money.

So lets go back to what i said: " I have said it many times, if japan whaled exclusively in the northern hemisphere Australians wouldn't care."

And that's the truth right there.

I do often get the impression that young brainwashed Aussies and Kiwis seem to regard the oceans of the entire Southern Hemisphere as theirs.

And I would totally agree with that (Not that it is, I mean I would agree with what your saying). All im trying to state here is that Sea Sheppard is not as welcomed in in any other part of the world more than in Australian and new zealand waters. Which was in reply to Bigboys original comment.

How is it research if it's lethal? What is being researched? How to kill them faster?

BigBoy: "WHERE is Sea Shepard ?... Oh, i forgot.... the cowards only mess with the Japanese because the Japanese take their abuse... unlike the people from Iceland etc."

Interesting handle, given the whining. I have a quick question for you -- where do Iceland and Norway conduct their whaling? Where does Japan do it? One of the reasons SS tend to make themselves more noticeable in defying the latter country is that they go to the Souther Ocean to conduct their 'ancient traditions' and laughable 'science', and because of how they exploit the loophole. If Japan were whaling in its own waters SS could not set foot in them.

Pretty simple, really.

As opposed to Japan thinking it belongs to the Japanese and its traditions?

What.... the Norwegians call whaling whaling?

I mean.... it is not whale research in the name of scientific progress? Where have these barbarians been? The Japanese Institute for Cetacean Research must be infuriated.

Amusing to see the OneWorld Let'sAll Live in Harmony crowd lecturing just where nations can and can't fish and who the oceans of the world belong to...

Could be they're all in your mind.

Ummm... lots of people object to what Norway and Iceland are doing with equal ferocity as they direct towards Japan, but as I said earlier there is a problem of logistics; Japan conducts is whaling under the guise of science, for starters, and does it WELL outside its own waters. Norway and Iceland do not. Try entering another nation's waters and telling them what they cannot do -- unlike in the Southern Ocean with Japan sending its coast guard, there would actually be legal grounds for arrest and seizure.

I can't see why you guys miss all that forest for one little tree!

Exactly. One of the rare occasions where I have to agree with you 100%,

Glad we agree. I shall celebrate with a 500ml can of Asahi Super Dry!

Lots of people? Equal ferocity?

I wonder if Lieberman's on? someone just logged in and gave all my comments a thumbs down! oh wait, he is!

"Lots of people? Equal ferocity?"

Yeah, tough to comprehend for you, I know. Let me help you. One person can also be called 'a person'. Two or more can be called 'people'. If you have two you might say 'a couple', regardless of their relationship status. If you have 3 - 5, depending on your way of thinking, you can say 'a few people'. If there are seven or so you might say 'several people'. If there are many, you can substitute 'many' with 'lots', or even 'a lot'. You see, it's akin to a determiner, which in grammatical terms modifies the noun. "Equal" equals... errr... means having the same quantity, measure, or value. "Ferocity" refers to the state of being ferocious, which is to say, 'fierce', or perhaps even 'unrelenting'. Would you like to know the definition of 'pasquinade' while we're at it? :)

I'm sorry you had a tough time with that, but I hope you understand now. Anytime you want to learn your native tongue, feel free to ask. In the meantime, you can also try to comment on the thread instead of just trying to attack other posters. Or let me guess... you going to bring in Canada next? :)

And so another slaughter goes on without any end in sight.

Where's a Klingon Bird of Prey when you need one?

Minke whales are much healthier than grain fed Cows! Better for your cardiovascular risk profile!

There's a lesson for Japan here.

Ask Japanese people about whaling and you will get a long lecture... all about things like... "whaling is our culture"... "our unique food culture"... "our traditions from ancient times"... etc etc ad nauseam...

What people can't understand is the relationship between Japanese "food culture" and the Antarctic...

People around the world wonder...

How on earth can Japan's food culture stretch 1000s and 1000s of kilometers all around the globe to include the Antarctic??

And people start to think... grabbing whales in the Antarctic is not food culture... in fact it's just greed and arrogance.

Japan should look long and hard at the Norwegians.

If they are going to ram their oh-so-precious "food culture" down our throats at every opportunity then they'd do better to take their whales closer to home as the Norwegians do.

If they could do that then, I believe, the protests would almost completely melt away.

One other point to remember is that every single country nearest to the Antarctic opposes Japan's whaling down there.

Every single one! Count them... South Africa, Chile, Argentina, Oz and NZ... all of them opposed to Japan's whaling.

How's that for international relations Japan?

Just ignore all those countries opinions... especially in this year when so many countries stepped up to help Japan in her hour of need after the earthquake and tsunami.

We can also try to imagine a similar situation in reverse.

Imagine if the Aussies sent a huge fleet of killing ships up to the Arctic every year to grab, let's say, polar bears for Australia's very important "barbecue culture".

Could you imagine it? Could you see how ridiculous it seems?

There... there you have Japan's Antarctic whaling...

@Choiwa: I have no clue about the relevance of Japanese whales fishing tradition, but the parallel made with Aussies defending Arctic polar bears hunting as cultural activity gave me a good lough!

@smithinjapan.. Yes it's quite simple really... SS has said they are defenders of the seas.. doesn't matter where it is.. NOT to mention the SS crew goes directly to "The Cove" to protest and cause problems with dolphin hunt so it has nothing to do with Japan only staying on their side.... Quite simple really

Japan harms its own case by harping on about spurious cultural traditions (as some of the comments note, the whaling doesn't happen anywhere near Japan) and the "scientific research" aspect of its whaling. On the other hand, there are plenty of minke whales, so they aren't an endangered species and there is no obvious reason why they shouldn't be hunted. This assumes there's demand for the meat, which is a bit of a problem in both Norway and Japan, it seems. If nobody wants it, I can't see much point in just hunting them for the hell of it.
