Netanyahu did not attend, and Israel’s seat in the grand U.N. hall sat empty because it was a Jewish holiday. Abbas was present, listening to the president through a translator’s earphone.

Well, that and they knew the text of his address, and chose to make a diplomatic statement by not attending. As statements go, its a pretty sharp slap in the face to the Obama administration, and a rejection of their policy.

I KNOW! Why on earth would anyone want peace?! Time for Republicans to mock Obama for suggesting such a thing. How dare he!

Failing and flailing at home Obama is desperate to move the spotlight overseas, and the media complies with a flurry of articles devoted to the bogus 'peace process' in the Mid east, and Obama's 'new approach' to wasting US aid money. US Voters don't care about Palestine. Why should they? The US has thrown tens of billions of bucks at them, they still hate us, Israel, Egypt, and each other.

TimRussert: "Failing and flailing at home Obama is desperate to move the spotlight overseas,"

This is where GWB would be a useful tool of instruction instead of just a tool. He can then, if the overseas spotlight venture also fails, move it to another sovereign nation. :)

"Why should they? The US has thrown tens of billions of bucks at them, they still hate us, Israel, Egypt, and each other."

Ummm... because they are a part of the world, same as the US, and it's in everyone's best interests (except war mongers and weapons manufacturers/totalitarian regimes) to have peace. Hmmm... well, I guess that would mean Israel buying a lot less US exported arms, as well as perhaps a cut in aid, so I guess it's pretty easy to see why Israel is against ME peace.

It still amazes me, though, the extent to which you guys will go out of your way to paint a positive message in a negative light. Yesterday Obama was evil for seeking to reduce poverty by means other than your taxes being doled out, today he's evil for desiring world peace. Simply amazing, you guys.

so I guess it's pretty easy to see why Israel is against ME peace.

Israel returns Gaza to the so-called Palestinians and the latter tear the place apart, destroying greenhouses and infrastructure with millions of dollars. The inhabitants of Palestine don't want a civilized society, let alone peace. If they wanted it they would prepare for it. They don't. But they also know they can count on gullible, self-loathing Leftists to identify with their lost cause.

Do you honestly believe your average IDF soldier - a doctor, a theology student, a businesswoman, an IT wiz - wants war when they can, thanks to the economic miracle Israel has wrought, make for themselves and their families a much better living in peace?

    Simply amazing, indeed.

Again Obama playing politics with the middle east. So with the pending failure of these "last chance" talks, Obama tries to make it a world failure and not just his. Even if Abbas and Netanyahu came to some sort of agreement, there are too many in the Knesset and Hamas who won't accept any negotiated peace.

" “This time will be different,” he declared, offering a now-or-never choice between Mideast stability and perpetual bloodshed. "

LOL! The only thing that is different is that this time we have an anti-Israel US leadership. However, as stupid as the Israeli government is, they are not ready to commit national suicide yet, so no, nothing is different here.

"With fresh Mideast peace talks seemingly on the brink of collapse"

This is all Israel's fault. They continue to demand their right to exist.

TimRussert: "The inhabitants of Palestine don't want a civilized society, let alone peace. If they wanted it they would prepare for it. They don't."

Once again you claim to know what others want, worst of all when you cannot yourself say what you agree with (only that you hate Obama). I believe the people of BOTH nations want peace, save perhaps Israeli politicians who gain from the current situation in the ME. The reason BOTH groups lash out and destroy each other is that neither is willing to budge an inch on what they've decided is theirs. This is not a one-sided issue, and hence Obama's calls for the nations and the people of the world (ME in particular) is a GOOD thing. Saying "Israel is right while Palestinians are wrong" clearly doesn't get anyone anywhere, not to mention that it is flat out wrong.

"Do you honestly believe your average IDF soldier - a doctor, a theology student, a businesswoman, an IT wiz - wants war when they can, thanks to the economic miracle Israel has wrought, make for themselves and their families a much better living in peace?"

I don't think they do, no. But clearly Netanyahu and a good number of Israelis want to have their cake and eat it to -- demanding peace at the barrel of a gun, and giving absolutely ZERO to Palestine while taking everything they want; hence, the man walks out on peace talks when it's suggested his side might have to do some work as well. He's pathetic, and as much a lunatic as any Palestinian leader (he can just hide behind a better army).

As for you, Tim, you need to stop living in this fantasy black and white land. Not agreeing with the actions or attitude of Israel does not mean siding with Palestinians who fire rockets into Gaza (and no, not ALL Palestinians do that, either). Obama is suggesting peace, and even while you hate the guy it doesn't mean you have to hate everything he suggests. A good idea is a good idea -- it doesn't wear colours or a party logo.

But they also know they can count on gullible, self-loathing Leftists to identify with their lost cause."

sarge: "This is all Israel's fault. They continue to demand their right to exist."

No. They continue to justify their right to exist by definition of destroying others. Everyone has the right to exist -- it's something Israel is also guilty of ignoring.

That is not what Hamas is saying. Read their charta.

    smithinjapan,

you need to stop living in this fantasy black and white land.

I agree. That is why I found this black and white statement perplexing:

I believe the people of BOTH nations want peace, save perhaps Israeli politicians who gain from the current situation in the ME.

No mention of Hamas = no balance

So, Obama wants peace in the Mideast? Time to give this guy another Nobel Peace Prize. He's earned it.

There can be no peace with Hamas. Of course, everyone would like to see "peace" in the Middle East, but frankly, I dont think its possible. It will always be Israel vs the Arab/Muslim nations. Most of the Muslim nations want to see the Israeli nation wiped off the face of the Earth. That is the leader of Iran`s main purpose in life. Obama sticking his oar into the pool can only cause more damage. He is the first anti-Israeli president of the USA. Hopefully, he also be the last. Obama is becoming more arrogant, and more boring, with each successive utterance. Same old, same old, and boring. "Yes, we can," should be changed to "We havent the ability."
