A good point.
The more I look at this treaty, the less I like it. It gives too much away, without getting enough back. And cold-war era scare tactics don't do it for me. Russia isn't the evil empire of the 80s. And Russian nukes are not nearly the threat that NK, Pakistan, an possibly a nuclear Iran are. I don't really care if the US inspects Russias nuke sites. Nor do I really care if they dismantle a bunch of their weapons. I do think though, that being locked into a treaty that explicitly forbids any development of anti-missile tech, is a mistake.

When you put it like that then START looks quite dubious. It's unrealistic for the Americans to sign on, and POWELL's fellow Republicans would find it quite awkward to follow him on START.

Just don't let Powell loose with any PowerPoint presentations as he in with the WMDs in Iraq. He singlehandedly changed the meaning of 'Death by PPT'...

The Russians will not follow the treaty. They are too paranoid for their own good.

We need to heed this warning and good news. We must voice our concern for the dangers and traps for US in the START treaty.
Timing of withdrawal from Afghanistan "depends on the situation on the ground." How are the people of Afghanistan supposed to trust America to leave the nation to Afghanistan when America is pushing for a (START) Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia partly for the purpose of making Russia a partner to help in Afghanistan? Afghanistan fought a war against Russian invasion.
How can anyone see a separation of America and Russia when the START treaty will bring Russians into America to monitor America’s nuclear weapons facilities? Spying is done secretly; should we call it a treaty?
How are the Afghanistan people (Americans, Iranians or North Koreans etc.) suppose to trust that America wants to rid the world of nuclear arms when they push for an arms reduction treaty and limit the reduction to 1550, and call for 80+ Billion Dollars to modernize over ten years? NOTE: Russia will also modernize their nuclear weapons. This is not an improvement.

I do not mind since this is no longer the Cold War era and we have more than enough nuclear warhead that could destroy all life in this world several times over.
Reducing some of them and forming a some sort of alliance with one another would be a great fresh start with one another.
