For a president facing poor poll numbers in the U.S. and the prospect of a difficult re-election campaign, the Australian audience may be as welcoming as any Obama could find at home.

News Editing 101, Lesson 1: Here is an example of the kind of irrelevant fluff AP reporters are encouraged to tack on to their stories. Circle it with your red pen, and make a little squiggle mark that indicates it should be deleted.

Ugh, the fawning over this empty suit by the Aussie media this afternoon makes me embarrassed to be Australian. I feel like this country's getting dumber by the minute.

If China should just stop making its neighbors feel threatened, it wouldn't leaving openings for these types of geopolitical maneuvers.

70 years ago Japan bombed Darwin. American will come to Darwin now. It is 70 years too late, isn't it?

Does Obama even know where Australia is?

Addressing the APEC Summit crowd in Hawaii he told them at one point that they were in Asia. By Obama's rather unique reckoning (America has 57 states, Austrians don't speak German...) Australia could be where Africa is. If Palin or even Perry said something as idiotic it would fill the headlines for two days.

    unreconstructed,

Obama lived in Indonesia, just north of Australia.

Most Americans probably don't know where it is though, so your concern is warranted.

Ha. Figured the Obama bashers would crawl out of the woodwork sooner or later. Try Googling "Bush visit to Australia" to see how fondly the last president was received. But then, that man caused wars, whereas this one works to prevent them.

    "an increasingly aggressive China"

The Chinese would diagree with that assessment.

"this one ( Obama ) works to prevent them ( wars )"

But he's expanded and still continuing the wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Yeah, the Chinese would disagree with the assessment that they are increasingly aggressive.
