Oh I can't wait to see the post on this article.
First news conference to tell the people that he listens. Something a prior president didn't do. < :-)

Soberly or hang-overly?
I know me and the wife tied one on good and tight in celebration, Nov. 4.

“the greatest economic challenge of our lifetime.” The Repubs used the war on terror to control us. The Dems are now going to use the economy to control us.. What's next? Aliens from space?

Sarge
"Some of the choices that we make are going to be difficult"
Get ready for your taxes to go up.

How many people that were actually behind much of the economic mess is going to be in his admin? Yes Repubs that were involved are out, but you are still left with the same scum that had a lot to do with the only thing why its not getting on anyone's nerves is that they were Dem.

higher taxes should not be a problem, as the average american has proven that they are incapable of personal finance. the average american has how many credit cards? how many use one credit card to pay the balance on another credit card? if the american government can become as accountable/transparent as the french government, then the american people should be willing to accept higher taxes in return for improved/better services. it's the concept of "give and take", not "take and take", that americans have never been able to appreciate.

Sarge - "Get ready for your taxes to go up."
Thanks to the out-of-control spending of the bush administration that Sarge supported for all of the last 8 years!

Sarge
Sushi - No, thanks to good ol' liberal tax and spend policies. Change my rear end.

Sarge - "No, thanks to good ol' liberal tax and spend policies."
When Republicans have been the party of government for the last 8 years?
When President Obama is forced to raise taxes because there's no money in the coffers due to the REPUBLICAN-led war in Iraq, the REPUBLICAN-assisted market meltdown, the subprime crisis that the REPUBLICAN government did nothing to prevent, and George W. Bush's insane tax cuts (at a time of war!) - all of which Sarge embraced and supported, Americans will know who to turn to when they are looking for people to blame.
And it's not the Democrats.

And the last tax and spend democrat administration was when? Why not check to see which party's president has been in control of the White House on the largest tax and spend terms. < :-)

Rising taxes are going to yet another 'legacy' of GWB failure-soaked terms.
And Sarge loved every minute of it while his country went down the toilet!
Heck, the Bush administration is now struggling to BORROW $550 billion (probably from the Chinese and Japanese govts.) to fund its $700 billion bailout package!
This will just create more debt.
Sarge, how could you let so much go so wrong?
When your country needed clear thinking, you were still thinking there were WMD in Tikrit.

sushisake must be really glad s/he voted for obama.

And Sarge, your attempt to pin the blame on anyone and anything but the Republicans simply underlines what most of us know already that you simply have no idea what is going on, sorry, just an observation.
BTW, I'm hoping Obama at this news conference will fully support Sarah Palain to lead the GOP in 2012.
That's going to guarantee the GOP remains in the political wilderness for another decade :-)
Sarah Palin 2012!

ImperiumMundi - I am stoked Obama won.
And I'm happy to know that you didn't buy any of the 'Obama is a Socialist', or any of the Bill Ayers, Tony Rezko garbage that was written for kiddies and believed by many with the same level of intelligence.
But now Obama's the man - and America elected him.
These are great times :-)

ImperiumMundi - "for us Americans it's always great times. that much i agree on."
I agree, especially when most of your countrymen think it's OK to borrow money you can't pay back and live outside your means, and then wonder why the financial market melts down in front of your faces and you get blamed for it.
Great times, indeed. :-)
Thankfully now you have a President-elect who is going to do something to fix it.
These truly are great times. :-)

"I agree, especially when most of your countrymen think it's OK to borrow money.."
wait wait wait. with your hours of posting here each day and the thousands of attempts you have made to change sarge's mind surely you are also American?

i like debate as well, sushisake.and am fascinated by politics.
as an American expat of a the "dog's years" variety i'm even more fascinated by the picture of my glorious country in the minds of people like you.
so what is it that makes changing sarge's mind so vital to your identity as a citizen of _____?
0
SushiSake3
ImperiumMundi - I'm actually more interested in the picture of my glorious country in the eyes of you and your countrymen.
So far, it's all good :-)
But you will naturally agree that a discussion of countries and who comes from where are completely irrelevant to this thread, and I know you will happily revert to discussing the topic of this thread - Obama's press conference.

taxes aren't the wolf at the door; massive budget deficits are. here's to hoping we finally see some federal budget surpluses and economic prosperity like we did under the last Democratic president! now that was fiscal discipline...

Sarge - "I though we're in a recession."
You finally get it? Awesome!
This recession has been brought to you by George W. Bush and his Loyal Supporters! (Oops, that'd be you :-)

Something has got to give!
Those who whine about higher taxes and big government need to get off whatever mind-altering substances they are taking. Look at the country! The national debt is a disgrace! Other countries have been forced to default for much less. The US is just lucky that it gets to make the rules and then change them so that it doesn't have to face economic realities.
The fact of the matter is that something has to be done, Curious George has run up a huge bill that somebody is going to have to pay for. Things cannot keep going the way they have been. Who is going to pay down this debt? You? Your kids? Your descendents in 200 years time? Wake up and smell the coffee folks. The fiscal situation of the US is in dire straights.

Sushi - What happened to the great times, then?

I saw the conference, and Obama had more verbal pauses than Bush has ever had, even with an audience full of loaded questions in his favor. He has all ready had to apologize for the comment on his speaking with former presidents when he said that he did not speak to the dead ones in a seance in reference to Nacy Reagan and her holding seances. He has thus made an offical apology for his off the cuff remarks. That one gaff, will probably fuel the Hannity's, Limbaugh's and others for their attacks on him.
He does well. Let him try to speak on his own, he is not so well, trying to make sure he doesn't do as well. Also noted from this conference, no questions were asked by Fox news.
Now, before you begin to call me a Republican and "Fix" news shill, I am not. But for a man to say that for the people that did not vote for him, he is their president too, well I think that also goes for the media as well. Maybe Fox didn't cave in and follow him directly, but they did give him a fair shot at times, and to just ignore them whole scale is probably not the best thing, since it looks like they will probably be the main voice of opposition to him.
Here's a suggestion Barry, if you are willing to meet with Iran, Cuba and Hugo, then I suggest you sit with Fox and get it out of the way. So when your loyal base begins to turn on you when they realize that you can't do everything, it will not look like you have come running to them for support, much like Hillary did when she was faced up against you before Super Tuesday and went on Fox news. Yeah you won, but it took a bit longer once she did that than if she hadn't.
Moderator: Please do not refer to Obama as Bary nor use his middle name.

Sushi - Why has the stock market reacted negatively to Barack's election? I don't get it.

as others have more eloquently pointed out americans need to damn well understand what CCs are & how they work, clearly far too many do not.
And bushes tax kickback to the rich was simply payback & totally daft.
Sarge, its clearly long over due for americans to start paying for america instead of having other countries primarily fund things, party is over(hopefully) & rightly so
here hoping america can get its financial act in some kind of order! Then maybe the equally daft J-govt cud do the same & wud be much easier to do in Jpn to boot without having to ever consider raising taxes

Anyway, sarge: Sushi - Why has the stock market reacted negatively to Barack's election? I don't get it." trust me, the democrats are using fear.. this is actually good news.
That one gaff, will probably fuel the Hannity's, Limbaugh's and others for their attacks on him." Yeah but, does anyone watch Fox news? I don't get it in Japan but I do get CNN and CNN said that Fox played very much in the middle and was considered the least biased. Now, I don't know if that is true or not, but I can say NBC and CBS sure pumped Obama and grilled McCain.

Im just wondering what dubya put up for colateral on the notes, Crawford??
Mexico?? Australia??
Whats the monthly payment and at what interest rate, we know they don't pay their consulate rental fees, just ask Tokyo.
So lastly if the US defaults on these loans whats the fall out. I just say this because the American tax payers are hearing the same from the banks at this very moment, so why should the US government have any better credit than the average tax payer.

I never did get an answer from the Obama campaign to my question "How can Senator Obama give 95% of working Americans a tax cut when 40% of them don't pay income taxes?"
0
Wolfpack
All that complain that Americans spend too much and use one credit card to pay off another still want Obama to raise taxes. That makes zero sense. The problem isn't the amount of money flowing into the treasury, it is spending. I agree that both parties have this problem and that is one of the major reasons why Republicans were pushed out of power. So why do Democrats think that more taxing and spening is the answer? If Democrats use the 90's anlogy they will be in for a major shock. We had a rare economc revolution in information technology that spurred productivity and growth that compensated for the negative effects of Clinton's tax increases. There is no similar economic revolution at hand to save our economy from high taxes this time.
Now that the election is over, Barack Obama is going to 'change' his tax plan. Let me guess, people making $41,000 a year are rich. Now that's the kind of change that Democrat's can appreciate! It only took him a few days after he was elected to start flip-flopping. I guess all of that moderate talk during the election were just the usual Liberal lies useful for gaining power but not for the socialists style of governing.

It'll be interesting, too, Sarge, to see how Obama plans to pay the $44 trillion price-tag for all his new federal programs he has promised to implement in his first term.....

Sarge: I think we all know exactly how Obama is going to give tax cuts to so many people who pay no taxes; he is going to manipulate the tax code to redistribute wealth. I don't understand the necessity of playing games with the tax system when he simply wants to redistribute wealth by confiscating from those who make money to those who do not. Instead of further distortion and complexity in the tax code, why not just simply pass a law that cut's checks every year for those that he wants to give a little extra cash to? That would be more efficient and would not have any distorting effects on the economy. My guess is that even Democrats in Congress wouldn't support the Redistributor-elect if the program wasn't termed something other than what it really is - welfare. Democrats love welfare as long as they don't personally pay for it themselves. They have an opportunity to pay extra to the Treasury through a check off on their Federal taxes but very few of those filthy rich Dems do it. Liberals are notorious for giving less to charity than Conservatives do (unless you count Barack Obama's campaign fund a charity.
I also find is amazing that no one in the main stream media bothered to ask Obama/Biden that since paying taxes is so patriotic, that he is going to reward people that they believe are not patriotic. No wait, the MSM were a part of his campaign - so I guess it's not really that amazing at all.

Alphaape,
Actually, President-elect Obama went on faux news and subjected himself to being in the same room as bill o'reilly for an interview (to quote Joe from Family Guy, "I scrubbed and I scrubbed, but...they just don't make water hot enough!").
You may not have heard about it because o'reilly couldn't nail President-elect Obama with a "got'cha" moment.

If you can't understand that because one event follows another it does not mean the first event caused the other, well, I guess you will never understand that a rooster crowing at dawn does not make the sun rise.
Why don't you learn a little about causal relationships and get back to us.

It's very hard to do that with someone like Obama who can speak so eloquently about the issues, yet is clever enough to not really say much of anything when all is said and done. It's truly a gift.

uh oh, the guy says he has spoken to all the living presidents and then after realizing the stupidity of his statement, he throws Nancy Reagan; another little old lady, under the bus to try to cover up an obvious gaffe.
after two years of being on the campaign trail where he threw his own beloved grandmother under the bus, I would have thought this guy would be a little more adroit in front of the cameras.

There is no other way to say it. All of the former presidents say it that way. You can't say you have spoken to all the presidents. Now, that would be stupid. Show me one past reference of how a former president or our current president would say it without saying "living" or "alive today."
The comment about Nancy Reagan was the gaffe. When you say he was "try[ing] to cover up an obvious gaffe" there is absolutely no substance to that. One gaffe.
Please show us how to word the statement!
0
VOR
all Obama had to say was "yes I have spoken to all the former presidents". there was no need to imply that he only spoken to the living ones. it was such an obvious blunder that he recognized it immediately and instead of laughing at himself he tried to cover it up with some clumsy reference to the former first lady's use of astrology. America has to face reality, they elected an arrogant a-hole to the oval office.

Taka, so far all we know about Obama's intelligence is that he knows how to read a teleprompter without mangling it up too bad. Bush was a horrible orator but does that make him stupid?
0
Sarge
goodDonkey - I see you couldn't answer my question: Why has the stock market reacted negatively to Barack Obama's election? The news of his election was supposed to instill confidence in the market.
So, Obama thought Nancy Reagan held seances, did he?
0

No, it was other things that made him stupid.

Sarge, I did answer your question I was trying to be subtle. You have no idea what the cause of a daily fluctuation in the stock market is. Claiming to know is just dumb. Baiting me with off topic questions is quite your style. Like I said in my answer, you don't understand causal relationships if you ask such questions. There is absolutely no difference in asking why the stock market reacted negatively to the election of Barack Obama and why the sun comes up after the rooster crows. You cannot establish a causal relationship between the two events.

That is incorrect language usage. The statement is not true. Just because you want a lower skill level of language does mean that educated people have to compromise. I admit there are a lot of people on the web that agree with you. Some of them don't even realize that your solution is incorrect. It is a false statement. Obama did not speak to all the former presidents he only spoke to the living ones.
Maybe Bubba speak set the bar for language usage in the current presidency however you will find that having an education and using it will be nothing to be ashamed of in the future. If a president does not use a qualifier as Obama did in his statement he is showing his lack of intelligence.
I have conceded that the comment about Nancy Reagan was unnecessary. It really was not that big of a deal but I guess some people are disparate enough to grasp at anything negative about the President Elect to console their bitterness.

Taka313, I saw the Obama interview with O'reilly. Bill threw him actual questioins that I would have wanted to hear him answer besides what is his favorite fooe (aka Larry King). Check the polls, most people in America when interviewed stated that Fox was by far the most fair in reporting both candidates.
Funnier still, is when the ombudsman for the Washington Post has come out to say that they did show an unfair bias towards Obama.
O'Reilly was not looking for a "gotcha moment." And by the way, McCain and Palin did not appear on his show. So if he was so in the "tank" for them (Reps), why didn't they show up on his show?
