committed to reforms...
What reforms? Give them all a driver's license and then citizenship for violating US immigration laws? Isn't it odd that every administration since Ronald Reagan has let the border go to hell? They ignore the fact that 70% of Americans want the illegal immigration problem stopped, whatever it takes. But nothing is ever done.
When talk of putting up a border fence grew shrill, the Mexican govt shrieked, "NO! You Americans cant build a fence! Why, that un-neighborly, that's un-American...& that's racist!" wtf? And anyone who supported this end was deemed a racist by the lamestream US media. Now that the border jumping Mexican criminals have done something that Mexico doesn't like...bringing in guns and drug cash...Obama has to zip down there on a quicky and apologize for the US, even though WE THE PEOPLE cried out for tougher border controls over 30 years ago!!! You cant have it both ways because it it cuts both ways you morons!!!
Now the Mexicans are crying Boo-hooo-hooo! because the same scum that are crossing our border with impunity are shooting each other like dogs in the street. Why cant the US govt understand that we don't want this kind of vermin in our country!!! Build a fence Obama, and you will make lots of friends on both sides of the fence!

If anything, the US government should provide MORE guns - give them to every law-abiding Mexican man, woman and child to help prevent crime!

Manufactured crisis that we hear about numerous deaths daily. But maybe you can clarify something teleprompter. Are there too many drugs coming across the border?
They are not going to build the mother of all fences to stop illegal immigration. It's too easy to dig under it, climb over it or go around it. < :-)

The USA, sadly enough, is the number 1 user of drugs in the world, before it was the Italian mafia, then Colombians, then Russians and Chineses, and for the moment the Mexican mafias, but even though the suppliers of drugs changes, American attitudes do not, enjoy your marijuana and cocaine and who cares about 6,000 plus Mexican mafiosi killing each other south of the border in Mexico, as long as you can have your cocaine parties from Hollywood to New York. Americans cry and cry that those dirty brown latinos bringing all their drugs into the USA, maybe Mexico should just let legalize all these drugs and let all those white kids, yellow, black, brown, pink, blue come and sky high in TJ,Nogales,Can Cun? Let us not forget that in Mexico you can not go to a Sears or JC Penny's and buy your self a necktie and then an M-16 like in the USA. The Mafia in Mexico has better guns, etc..than the Mexican police and Mexican army, thanks to all the dollars gained from all the drug addicts and so called casual users (no such thing in my book) ask a Mexican like me who sees young lives destroyed on both sides of this border everyday.

Since the administration knows that an outright US ban on private ownership of firearms will not pass on a vote, this is the first step in a clever end around to restrict gun ownership in the USA. What was not mentioned by either politician is the fact that the overwhelming majority of weapons used by the drug cartels in Mexico come from the exact same place the drugs do, South America.

The big part of the lie that "90% of the guns used by the drug cartels in Mexico come from the US" is that the real statistic is "90% of the guns turned over to the FBI / ATF for tracing are found to have come from the US. Most of the captured guns in Mexico are full automatic machine guns. These are already banned in the US. So are the grenades and explosives.
Turns out that the major sources of guns in Mexico are China, South America and (the real winner) AWOL Mexican solders who took their weapons with them.

Of course the real solution to the problem of illegal drugs is to make drugs legal and spend the money for this "war on drugs" on helping the addicts. This would help stabilize governments in S America and Afghanistan, get the violence out of the "system" and get the addicts above the radar so they can be helped. It's also another source of tax revenue.
While I'm stirring that pot I think that all the immigration quotas are bunkum and ought to be scrapped. Once you don't have to police for illegal drugs crossing the border you can just make all the immigrants legal too. They won't stick around if there aren't jobs. Just set the welfare system up so they can't claim benefits and the only people who will come are the kind with the brass to succeed. Those are the kind we want.

The prohibition on marijuana has become ridicules now. We know that it's only harmful if your a part of the DEA. Outside the DEA they know the truth. It's no harmful.
Legalize pot and 75% of the problem is answered. It will stop cartel killing ang give a market, reduce cross border crimes and give a market that could produce taxes of several $$billion.
You can thank the NRA for all the guns going to Mexico. < :-)

daydream, this is about crack cocaine cartels not MJ. The cartels are going to get guns whether they're from the US or some other country. While the US can try to do more on its end to stop any weapons from coming out of our country, you still have the others to worry about.

HonestDictator - Yes I agree. But most of the drugs coming across are marijuana. Not cocaine. That's been in government reports for years, unless there's something new.
And until we stop the flow of guns across the border, that crying point will be there. Stop that crying point. But as long as gun makers can ship their weapons across the border with little to no deterance, they will continue. < :-)

The bottom line about the guns from the United States is that only 17% of the guns confiscated have been submitted for tracing. Of that 17% traced 90% are from the US. Most are handguns.
To buy a handgun in the US you must be a citizen of the state where you purchase it. We have an instant check for ID and criminal record before the paperwork can be processed. A driver's license is necessary.
Those guns can be traced back to that buyer and gun store. Why is this not done?

The problem is that the anti-gun crowd are trying to hijack the drug debate. That's not going to solve the drug problem.

To buy a hand gun in America all you have to do is go to a gun show and buy frpm someone's trunk. Get anything you want. Forget this American with driver's licence and no criminal record. < :-)

With all handguns there is a mandatory federal firearms check and handgun waiting period. Rifles can be sold at gun shows or privately with no check (dealers must do the check however). =People only sell a handgun to a FFL 01 (dealer license) or from a FFL 01. =You will not walk out with a handgun at one of these shows.
Each state and even some cities have their own laws that will go beyond the federal mandates. (Chicago handgun ban, NYC handgun permit --> impossible to get for most)

Bagsey, maybe you didn't see the 60Minutes program last week. Virginia has some different rules.
