    "Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner"

Isn't this the guy who said his failure to pay $34,000 in taxes was a careless mistake? I hope he doesn't make any more careless mistakes in this job, that could cost taxpayers way more than $34,000, in fact, it's looking more like $800 billon...

Stimulus package? This administration can't even deal with routine emergencies. 1 million in Kentucky have been without power for 5 days. Freezing temps. Where's FEMA? Where's the media outrage?

This administration can't even deal with routine emergencies. 1 million in Kentucky have been without power for 5 days.

In 1990, many areas upstate the of NY and some NE states had no power for almost a month. In 2001, the same areas had no power for a week too.

Stimulus package may not be directly connected to emergencies due to mother nature.

With this economic crisis in the US and much of the world, all solutions on the table are just experiment and the outcome may be good but will have a bad effect on the other perspective. The whole systems are now like inter-wined, spaghetti-like bundled noodles. Pulling one strand will affect one or more strands. ... this economic crisis is really scary

If the administration lowers the mortgages, how about now the revenue of the US treasury. The US economy and the government need hard cash specially that her national debt is now 10 trillion dollars. (just 800 Billion dollars in the 1970's).

The stimulus package of 825 billion dollars will for sure add to the national debt, directly or indirectly.

Out of the 10 trillion debt, about 4 million was borrowed from Japan and China where China has slightly bigger amount.

This means, every American has a debt to pay as lifetime obligation to Chinese and Japanese. 6 trillion debt are from UK, Brazil, Russia, India and some world-lending bodies. The lower the interest rates circulating in the US economy may give longer years for the American to pay these 10 trillion debt to Chinese, Japanese etc.

With this amount, US may no longer go to war with China in the future in protection of Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and her pacific allies because without even firing a single bullet, China can just float this money in the air and the whole US economy and the world will definitely suffer.

It makes no difference to the republicans what is in the economic plan, they aren't going to vote for the package. They are going to be as defiant as they can be. They will defy any vote unless they are given full rein and pray that this country falls deeper into a depression. < :-)

Did not hear you complain about Bush appointing political allies to positions they were not qualified for. I am not particularly impressed with Geithner and I hope the tax thing was just an oversight, but he is qualified for the position. So there is a better chance that this Obama appointee will fulfill his duties to the people of America better than any 10 of Bush's appointees.

The Democratic president does not need Republicans for his economic plan and other initiatives to clear the Democratic-controlled Congress, but he has said he wants to get away from politics as usual and introduce a new era of bipartisanship at a time when the country faces two wars and its worst recession in 70 years.

Now, there are some gop senators beating their chests and declaring that the Economic Rescue Bill will need 60 votes to get past the senate, meaning they're threatening a filibuster. However.. republican governors are in Washington this weekend lobbying FOR the bill. The state coffers are running dry, and they need help. So, even if there is a filibuster, I don't know how difficult it would be to peel some gop senators off of the block. Arnold, Sara Palin, Charlie Crist (fla) and Jim Douglas (vt) all are putting the screws on Mitch McConnell. House republicans could afford to do as rush limbo told them to do, but Senators have a much more diverse constituencies. Do they want to go back to the voters and say "I obstructed this bill just like a porcine talk radio guy told me to"??

1 million in Kentucky have been without power for 5 days.

President Obama has been all for infrastructure improvements such as strengthening the power grid. Besides, this is private industry. Shouldn't government get off the back of business, isn't that what you guys are al about?

Isn't this the guy who said his failure to pay $34,000 in taxes was a careless mistake?

Yeah, that was definitely in the news 2 or 3 weeks ago. You still talking about that?

Within hours of the power outage on Tuesday, there were teams from Arkansas and Alabama on there way to Kentucky to work on the power lines.

Also, during the briefing I received on Thursday, the Army's medical team was prepared for additional cases of pneumonia, additional pharmaceuticals were ordered to handle the possible overflow and a plan was initiated to accommodate any overflow in patients.

    So...what exactly is your point?

By the way, if anyone is stupid enough to try to compare what happened in Kentucky to Hurricane Katrina, as of today, there was a total of 11 deaths in Kentucky because of the ice storm. There will be dozens more, but...the response was there. Power is up, most of us survived and anyone stupid enough to attempt to portray this in the same light as the incompetence that was shown during Hurricane Katrina will likely be disappointed (and this will shed a great deal upon the integrity of said individuals) to find that the recovery efforts were handled in a rather quick fashion, by both republicans and Democrats alike.

I sure hope President Obama doesn't spend as much as the previous president wasted on Iraq thanks to the support of various Republicans and conservatives (some of whom post on Japan Today) who are now bashing President Obama for....spending too much on America and Americans.

Now, that would be REALLY hypocritical.

I think that the only thing that is going to restore financial order is decreased expectations and I fear that we are not psychologically or sociologically suited to that. I mean, why put on a sweater, turn the thermostat down and read Plato before retiring for the night after a bowl of thin soup when you could put another log on the fire, turn on the plasma set and watch CSI while having pizza and beer? Lost in the threat to our way of life has been the begged question of what part of our way of life is worth protecting.

SezWho: why put on a sweater, turn the thermostat down and read Plato before retiring for the night after a bowl of thin soup

That's what you do? I end my day with charity work, I unplugged my heater a long time ago after making my own sweaters, and I only eat food that I grow. Honestly Sez, you should try to be more like me.

    Taka313,

That was too well said and succinct by half. I can't improve upon it but I can at least be like me.

    SuperLib,

If you do those things, more power to you. And, then, yes, I should try to be more like you.

If you are, then, agreeing with what I have said about reduced expectations and are admonishing me to be more active and to think more about others than about myself, I would say that this is a criticism that I can and do take to heart. If you disagree, then tell me what you disagree with.

42 dead in Kentucky, and still counting. Where is FEMA? Where is the gliberal media outrage?

    Taka313

How fortunate for you. More dead people for you to use as gloating fodder. You must be tickled. Comparing deaths in Kentucky, which is largely rural is far different than New Orleans, but I'm glad their deaths weren't in vain. You got what you wanted. Isn't that the important thing?

    "Let them eat steak"

"Can the Obama administration be anymore tone deaf? After pushing his $1.1 trillion Generational Theft Act of 2009 through the House last night, the White House apparently decided to throw itself a swank cocktail party. According to ABC’s Jake Tapper, the menu included alcoholic beverages (vodka martinis are an Obama favorite, reportedly) and wagyu steak. Yeah, “wagyu steak.” $100 per serving delicacy. I had to look it up, too."

Not that michelle malkin needs $100 steaks to start frothing mindlessly but it's funny that she, and "the right" didn't really bat an eye over billions of dollars of cash disappearing in Iraq.

Of course, this comes from the same crowd that thinks there's a media conspiracy because the tragic deaths of 44 people didn't garner as much media attention as the more than 1800 deaths after Hurricane Katrina.

Proof positive that more money should be spent on education and treating mental illness.

I'm sure that all Republicans are eating macaroni and cheese. Bush started the spending spree and Obama is simply keeping the snowball rolling and growing. As a nation it seems America lacks personal/financial responsibility and it shows in politicans behavior both republican and democrat(including presidents).
