Another smart idea from Obama and his team. Finally instead of hiding in the sand on energy the country is starting to invest in its future. Day by day the country is being fixed after years of neglect.

Awesome. Very good news.

Well certain things can't really change, we all know what happened when they switched to an open top.

Awesome. Very good news" Could be, but he's already got his "favorite" companies getting all the business... There are laws being put in place in some areas, namely New Orleans, on who you can and can't buy from.

You mean the Prez didn't just ride his bike to the event? Jeeze, I think some measure for security should be allowed.

It would be more accurate to say what Obama is doing is putting 3.4 billion of the taxpayers' money towards projects he himself has zero knowledge about, but which his radical agenda calls for: as much control of banking and finance as possible, then housing and finally power and utilities. He declared during his campaign he would basically sabotage the coal industry.

The only people who are going to have a problem with this are the ignorant and the one that just hate anything he says......
Improving a nations Infrastructure is only important to the people who love their nation rather than their party....How sad for those that take party over nation.....No, not sad, no, so Republican.......
GOOOOOOOoooOOOOOOOoooo Fox news!

tanglewood - thanks for the laugh!
As JoeBigs rightly said - "Improving a nations Infrastructure is only important to the people who love their nation rather than their party....How sad for those that take party over nation.....No, not sad, no, so Republican....... "
So Anti-American.

$3.4Billion is just a drop in the bucket toward this initiative of fixing the country's power grid. But it's a start. It's a start in the right direction. I've been waiting for someone to start talking about upgrading the nation's power grid.
This is progress. < :-)

tanglewood - "Obama is doing is putting 3.4 billion of the taxpayers' money towards projects he himself has zero knowledge about,"
You are implying a president needs to know about everything he impacts.
That's doesn't show a lot of intelligence.
"but which his radical agenda calls for: as much control of banking and finance as possible."
Are you implying that the free market financial system - the same one that has been at the very core of the global recession we are now in - is somehow better?
Also not very intelligent.

tanglewood, I assume you are American?
Are youy honestly saying that President Obama should refrain from upgrading your nation's grid?
Are you serious????

tanglewood - "He declared during his campaign he would basically sabotage the coal industry."
Are you somehow against breathing cleaner air??
Your 7.38 post above was one of the most bizarre - yet funniest - posts I have read in a while. :-)

My power-grid is fine and haven't had a problem unless a tree falls on a line or a drunk hits a pole. Also my elec cost is about 12cents/kWh.
Transformers are very efficient unless they get hot ~99% typical and have been that way for about 100+ years. It would make no sense to convert a power transformer to a digital switching power supply since we are talking AC->AC at great effiency here.
=Electric, gas/propane companies have been raising prices to where consumers are going off the grid and doing their own thing. Solar cells are cheaper. People burn wood, use wind. The rich/Gov don't like that and the rich owners/stock-owners are slowly losing money.

Smart grid technology is not about creating a "clean-energy economy." It's about spying on everything you do and knowing everything you have.

egonosensei - I always love a good wacky conspiracy theories and the one you posted is as wacky as it gets.
I like this part the best;
The computer that controls your home’s thermostat and lights also controls your wardrobe, budget, social habits, and even your eating habits.
The 'smart' grid is so smart it can control your daily routines.
Dave I don't think you should wear that tie, it doesn't match with your shirt. Dave you can't wear those socks. Dave don't spend anymore then $20 tonight.

As long as the smart grid doesn't have a problem with my prodigious consumption of energy for my pet projects I've got no problem with updating the system...especially if it means less brownouts.
People always assume that everybody from the U.S has been totally ignorant of alternative fuel sources until it became popular. Geeze, I still remember when me, my dad, and uncle would ghetto rigging most of our yard equipment to run on straight alchohol and my first car used gasohol (and to a lesser extent E20 when it was available). The only reason I didn't buy one that runs on E85 was because they are charging way to much for essentially the same vehical with a slight modification to the fuel system. That'll probably be what I spend my next vacation on doing.

To run E85 you need to advance the timing drastically because alcohol burns so slowly. A higher compression engine 13:1-15:1 would help also. Alcohol doesn't lubricate as well either so you must factor that in.

If you have higher compression on low 85 octane rating, you actually need a lower compression engine. There is no mass production engine that is currently available in 13 to 15 to one ration. The most compression is around 12 to 1 ratio, that is a aviation, high performance racing engine.

Good Jorb- you didn't read the article did you? Also, I teach at a university. I don't have private students. Your opinions of me are unfounded, are all your opinions unfounded? Why should I even entertain to have a discussion with you?
The article is about using the "smart grid" to collect personal data about citizens, not about telling them what to do. You tried to make a strawman argument out of what I said but it didn't work. If anyone wants to meet in Tokyo sometime to discuss how the real world works I'd be glad to do so, but actually I'm getting pretty impatient so I think I'll just let you all fend for yourself.
Here's more info about data collection of citizens:
