Environmentally friendly energy is going to be extremely costly to develop en masse, and result in a lot of jobs lost when replacing less friendly methods of fuel production, but it's necessary and will benefit ALL in the long wrong. Might be more in the air people breath than in the form of cash, but people need to realize that's a risk they have to accept.

I getting pretty fed up with people who say greening the economy is a pocketbook issue.

Of course, they are correct, but on a very low level.

Weaning the US and other major eoconmies is far, far more than simply a pocketbook issue - it is also a health issue (short and long term), and most importantly, it is a survival of our species issue.

With climate change going the way it is, if my kids and grandkids will be able to breath cleaner air, drink clean water and actually have a planet worth living in when they inherit it, I'll be MORE than happy to get hit in my pocketbook.

People need to stop thinking short term and get thinking that climate change is an issue of plantary survival.

Good news that Obama is departing from Bush´s stance on environment. I am witn Sushisake on this: we should think of now, but of future. Say, 50 years from today. Yesterday, on NASA´s images from Hubble, there was a map predicting that some parts of the world will be 8 degree Celsius **hotter!! **than today. The Americas and Australia the most affected areas. Can you imagine a summer of 350 days, at 50 C? In America? It´s never too early to do something about environment. In my opinion, US could set the pace with four measures: 1) start using ethanol, which is green and cheaper than gasoline. 2) wind farms near windy cities close to the coast. 3) green roofs - which is something individuals are already doing by themselves. 4) on a global level, a meeting prohibiting fires that are used for harvesting sugar-cane, the prime source of ethanol. This is happening in Brazil, for instance. All the clear air that ethanol does not pollute, farmers there pollute themselves with these fires.

Time to get busy. The North Sea is in a 15% decline rate and no new production investment, Mexico in a 16% decline rate and no new production investment...as well very little worldwide investment in replacements in alternative energy means we will hit an Energy wall much sooner than expected. The return of $150/barrel of oil can't be far behind.

USA can do many things since it uses the most oil in the world. Solar in the southwest along with wind would create a lot of electricity. It's not about just one solution but many. I like Thermal because it's site agnostic and uses the ambient temperature right in the ground that everyone can use.

But given the above now is not the time to wait or cry costs. Peak Energy is coming and soon Americans and the rest of us will wonder why we waited to get these up and running?

    @LostInNagoya:

Ethanol...nope. Ethanol is a net energy loser, ask any farmer. It is not cheaper than gasoline since to make it requires the farming equipment to run on gasoline to begin with. That equipment doesn't run on ethanol.

    wind farms, check

    green rooftops, check

    lets add passive solar

    and solar panels

sugarcane ethanol only makes sense in Brazil and no where else because of something called cheap human labour.

the energy of ethanol is not equivalent to gasoline, thus you would have 1/3 less energy in a gas tank. It would be cheaper to drive less than lay waste to all farms on earth just to keep driving. This is nuts.

Forget driving. Get a bike, get into railways. Hope for electric cars but it's a bit late. The age of the car as a liquid fuel based transportation system is coming to an end.

Retool urban design more like Europe and yes Japan would be the best thing that the USA could accomplish if it really meant to save energy and improve their way of life.

But the answer is not endless driving!

Japan and Europe get most of their electrical energy from nuclear power plants. I didn't see nuclear mentioned by Obama. This technology is available right now. It's not some pipedream that may become economically viable a half a century from now. I'm all for wind, solar, biofuels, etc., but these technologies are still in development and we need to get off oil right now.

CBS reported that Obama wasted 9 000 gallons of fuel flying himself and his sanctimonious entourage to an Earth Day event.

I'll start to believe the hype when I see Obama, Gore and friends living the lifestyle they preach to the little people.

Till then, they're just watermelons as far as I can tell.
