In exploring a breakthrough engagement with Myanmar, Obama first sought assurances of support from democracy leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

Obama is working hard for the US to earn back the respect of the world.

Japan Today: can you call the country by it's correct name not the title given to it by an illegal junta? It's called Burma in the article for a reason.

So you think a former Speaker iof the House, and a former Governor (and son of a Governor) do not know where Myanmar is? Benjamine Franklin was right....only smart people should be allowed to vote which would eliminate you.

Burma is just a tiny step up from North Korea. The military running the joint are aristocrats lining their pockets - locking up those who challenge them and want democracy. Awful place.

There are changes happening and that's encouraging. Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest and is free to go wherever she wants. She will also run in the next elections.

The party of Myanmar's opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has decided to contest upcoming by-elections, a crucial step on the country's path towards greater democracy with the Nobel laureate likely to stand for a seat in the new parliament.

They are also in the process of releasing political prisoners and I think it won't be long before they are all released.

North Korea needs to start following their example.

A genuinely regional union of Asean has gradually found itself standing on the sidelines with the participation of self invited big mammoths claimed to have core national interests in the S.E. Asian quiet waters & all of a sudden. Meanwhile, the iron lady Clinton, after having stirred up ( sorry, quite true ) troubles in almost every corners, decided to put her hands into what ? Myanmar ! Please don't bring wars again to the ( not so democratic but peaceful ) little country where living standard may be poor but people are happy ! Of course, Ms. Clinton, you can definitely surround & trap China on one if their outlets to the Indian Ocean.. Then send all your Aircraft carriers to occupy Shanghai & slap in their face directly ! Leave these innocent little countries tranquil !

Leave these innocent little countries tranquil !

Make no mistake - Burma is not a "tranquil" or "peaceful" little country. Just ask Aung San Suu Kyi and anyone who opposes the military - many of whom have simply "vanished". I am hoping the prospect of democratic elections that Zichi mentions will happen and are free and fair - but Burma absolutely needs free democracies like the States, Australia, Japan and the EU monitoring the whole process. Good luck Ms. Clinton.

Anyone following Myanmar will have heard of their recent rejection of dam financed by the Chinese in the north - 80% of the power was slated to go to China, but due to domestic opposition, the junta amazingly rejected the deal even though construction was already underway.

Perhaps the country is finally realizing what some Middle East leader once said: the Soviet Union (read: China here) provides money; the United States provides solutions.

The US regime continues to act like an unemployed junkie running out of friends to borrow from and possessions to hawk. The next move, Myanmar.

Why is this move coming now?

This move is being made to advantage the US.The US is losing allies in Asia (notably Japan) and is looking elsewhere.
