As someone observed, the McCain-Clinton proposal has the perverse effect of maximizing demand, minimizing supply and buying the rest from the people who hate us the most. Not to mention, it would leave Uncle Sam deeper in hock to the Chinese.

Betzee - true.
McCain's in a twist here too - he says he supports the fight against global warming and yet backs a gas tax holiday, which will only make global warming worse.
McCain's stance is not unlike his opposition to, and now support for Bush's tax cuts.
McCain doesn't really seem to know what he wants.

In fact he wants to sew up his party's based which consists of fiscal conservatives (tax cuts), military hawks (endless war), and those who ridicule environmentalism. At a fixed 18.4 cents per gallon, however, federal taxes are a rapidly dwindling percentage of rising pump prices. Rescinding the tax would, as you point out, only encourage drivers to put off lifestyle adjustments that favor conservation and, of course, send more greenbacks overseas.

Note 'accustomed to'. Isn't it about time Americans begin to face reality and that the free ride is over?

I don't like seeing Clinton and McCain working together. It makes me think that the two of them are just playing politics... but of course, in whose interest?

Most people see this as a non-issue, something manufactured for political gain with quick hits in the media. Others, well....simply have no self control. ;)

"Isn't it about time Americans begin to face reality and that the free ride is over?"
European notions about taxation constitute "reality" for the rest of us?
Please elaborate.
