Who is this guy - a dictator! I thought Congress made the laws?

Obama knows best! How to spend your money, how to run a bank, how to run companies, how to design a car, everything. Hugo Chavez is smiling...

Isn't it just horrible that Obama is going to require auto companies start producing cars with ther technology that we have available. Requiring car companies to get better mileage then we are getting right now. We are getting about the same mileage that we got in the Model "T". After 100 years you'd think they could do better. But we're still burning fossil fuels and getting the same mileage as we were.

    I'm smiling. < :-)

Goddamit, Obama is making stupid decisions daily. It is my right to drive a car with whatever the MPG it has. I work hard for this right, i sure aint going to start driving some Japanese style cissy minicar.

The guy has lost the plot and should resign before he makes our nation the laughing stock of the world.

Isn't it just horrible that Obama is going to require auto companies start producing cars with ther technology that we have available." YOu are not reading into the news carefully enough. Guess who gets most of the contracts to implement this? And you thought GWB's Oil & Haliburton connections were raw....

Cleo: If you are a meat/beef eater, you are just as bad moderateguy09.

  • 0

    teleprompter

Link auto emissions to mileage standards. Yeah, cuz that has worked so well in California.

As of yesterday almost 800 Chrysler dealerships across the nation are set to close down.

What a disaster this guy is.

"It is my right to drive a car with whatever MPG it has"

    Not anymore.

I heard the UK called the nanny state which was started by PM Blair. Seems like Obama has taken a leaf out of his book and decided what is best for us and taken away our free will.

Well Obama, you fruitcake, i'm gonna cruise down the highway in my gas guzzling car and you aint stopping me buddy. I have rights, i pay my taxes to enjoy my life without government interference. Obama you are a joke and all independent moderate voters like myself agree.

Yes you do have rights, however, it's talk like that that will never ever get us off foreign oil. But, please do as you please. < :-)

It is my right to drive a car with whatever the MPG it has.

And I have the right to breathe clean air. So where does that leave us?

It is my right to drive a car with whatever the MPG it has.

And I have the right to breathe clean air. So where does that leave us?

And I want to smoke on a airplane. So where do we draw the line.

Sure seems like the people against this measure would much rather they and their kids and families continue to breathe polluted air.

All because - it seems - they feel President Obama is infringing on their God-given right (dammit!) to continue to breathe dirty, polluted, carcinogen-laden air.

It's like having a choice between clean water and dirty water, and the moderateguy09's, teleprompter's and Sarge's of this world are crying - "Yep! I wanna drink the dirty water and I don't need the Government to tell me to drink clean water!"

What's with that? Attitudes like this really blur the line between sheer stupidity and outright insanity, I'm sorry.

moderateguy09 - "The guy has lost the plot and should resign before he makes our nation the laughing stock of the world."

Clearly you've been asleep for the last 8 years under bush...... :-)

Honestly, the Extreme Right on this board seem to be afraid of ANYTHING that looks like the forever maligned 'government interference,' even if it is healthy and will benefit them.

Personally, if I were in California, I'd be all for Arnie's attempts to raise fuel efficiency standards on cars if it means I and my family can breathe cleaner air.

But no, the Extreme Right would much rather drown in smog and car fumes, all to protect them from 'government interference,' ha ha ha :-)

And it's interesting to note, the people who are against this moev are EXACTLY the same people who:

1/ Don't beleive in global warming 2/ Think bush / palin / mccain were viable

There's definately something in the air, if you ask me. :-)

  • 0

Given the myriad of issues that you disagree with Obama on, does that mean you're part of the extreme Right, Sushi? ;)

Sure seems like the people against this measure would much rather they and their kids and families continue to breathe polluted air.

Don't let the fact that air is cleaner now in American cities than it was in the 70's get in the way of the hopeychangeydotgov talking points you dutifully regurgitate!

  • 0

    SushiSake3

tele - but you'd still prefer to breathe dirty air because hey - you've got rights and that damn government better not make any laws that might improve your health, am I right? :-)

Your paranoia about government intervention - even when it will be good for you - is silly. It's not as if Americans know what's good for their health, what with 60% on average obese, and all that.

  • 0

    SushiSake3

"New vehicles would be 30% cleaner and more fuel efficient by 2016, according to officials familiar with the administration’s discussions."

Incredible, the Extreme Right hear things like this and think it's a "problem."

Seems like they would rather go backwards.

    Too much! :-)

  • 0

    moderateguy09

Gee , there are so many gullinle fools on the extreme left on this site, who actually believe the trash spewed by their Messiah.

Cars are for getting from a to b and also for fun. If my car consumes lots of gas it sure aint no business of anyone but me, so Obama butt out of my personal freedoms man.

Moderator: Please do not use the word "Messiah." It lowers the level of discussion.

The air in America is cleaner now than when I was a kid. Cars are safer.

Have you ever even been to the States? - object of unending fascination for you.

Obese? Not me. The rest of America? Yeah, with rates probably quite similar to wherever it is you are from.

Life is all about choices, and trade offs.

At first I thought obesity was off topic, but I realized that like a true fan of the Nanny State you'd also like to strictly control what folks can and can't eat, wouldn't you.

And like Obama and his totalitarian friends you'd also like to see people sitting in the dark, in a home the gov't owns, without a car, basically in "re-education" - forced to confess to imaginary sins they have committed against Gaia.

Why not let the market sort it out? It's self regulating, just like the financial industry!

  • 0

    moderateguy09

Only Teleprompter and myself can see the way Obama is heading. A socialist state with Obama as supreme leader beckons.

I bet he would try to make guys like me scrap our cars, bought out of our hard earned cash and buy new cissy low powered trash. The guy has lost his senses, in a few days he disses Israel and now regular moderate guys like myself, who may well vote for him if he had good policies.

  • 0

    moderateguy09

TJrandom: Why don't you just follow blindly your hero Obama and walk blindly into a socialist state, where we drive tiny cars and fund the one idle. Obama is out of line, he is upsetting too many people too quickly. Damned, if i give up my car for anyone. This is America not Europe.

  • 0

We all know what dependency on a big car is a sign of, don't we?

Heh, and I forgot to mention it is the French that created that thing. What more proof do you need that small, economical cars are nothing but trouble!

  • 0

    yabits

Don't let the fact that air is cleaner now in American cities than it was in the 70's....

This is actually quite funny, coming from a conservative. I grew up during the 1960s and clearly recall the rabid, right-wing squawking against how all of the newly enacted anti-pollution laws were going to hurt the American economy. Well, that didn't happen.

But the air did get cleaner. It's just funny to see how the pollution between the ears of right-wingers hasn't cleared up one bit.

  • 0

"Seen the one Obama tools around in?"

I wanna know if the new mileage requirements extend to that one too.

"Seen the one Obama tools around in?"

Yeah, it's a stetch caddy like what dubya had:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2005CadillacDTSpresidentiallimousine.jpg

Only US President Barack Obama's looks decidedly more cool. Heh.

  • 0

    Sarge

But, Madverts, you're actually right on this one!

  • 0

    Sarge

So, the new mileage requirements don't extend to Obama's cool limo.

  • 0

    Sarge

"mileage requirements for cars and trucks"

I can understand the government setting certain minimum safety standards for cars and trucks, but not mileage standards. Heck, might as well set mileage standards for fighter jets and tanks.

  • 0

    Madverts

Obama's ride is pretty cool in comparision to WPE. I imagine it is one of the most un-economical motors in circulation.

  • 0

    Sarge

Madverts - You'd be right about Obama's ride being un-economical. But then, no U.S. president has ever tooled around in an economical car.

  • 0

    Madverts

You can't expect them to - all that armour and technology must mean it guzzles like an old time Sherman.

  • 0

    cleo

tele's link says that The Beast is 'a green-conscious, hybrid-ish vehicle'. Maybe if American presidents didn't live in daily fear of being gunned down by some crazy fellow countryman exercising his 'right to bear arms', Obama and all the rest who have held/will hold the office would be able to tool around in a more economical car. I dream of the day we will see an American president cycle to work.

moderateguy - the size of the car is in inverse proportion to the size of the appendage. I'm surprised you need it spelled out for you.

  • 0

    adaydream

teleprompter I want to see the link you've got that says the air is cleaner now then in the 70s. Prove your post. < :-)

I have been hearing the republicans in the past whining and crying about the democrats and overseas fuel is bringing this country down. But when there is another solution that would help to burn less fuel and it's brought out by the democrats, it's horrible.

However I'm sure that if george bush had brought this out, it would have been great. But as long as george bush and dick cheney are making money from oil, this would never ever hit the blackboard.

Last year and I continue to get emails from republicans who don't want to see oil from Chavez. But you'd rather get oil from Chavez and your right to burn all the gasoline you like in your high fuel burners. You're hypocrits. There's no other words for it. < :-)

    DXXJP

    LMAO

You can tell who knows what about what and tella09 sure dosent have a clue. You two do realize the goverment has been dictating MPG since the 70's or did you two just wake up and think Obama made this up over coffee.

Just to let you two know we have had this tech since the 50's, ever wonder why cars dont weigh 3 ton anymore. I have a 1.3lt powered car I know it will outrun anything the two of you own and it still passes current mileage and emissions laws.

Before you go crying the sky is falling look out the window and check first. I know your world came to an end with your dictator scampering away back to craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawford, but look at the bright side at least this president showed up to work as soon as he was elected.

I guess if he had taken a dubya vacation that would have been bad too.

  • 0

    adaydream

teleprompter must be busy. I checked some sourses and I am incorrect. There has been a nice reduction in pollution emissions. That doesn't negate the need to do better and increase reductions. < :-)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_pollution

The effects of these laws have been very positive. In the United States between 1970 and 2006, citizens enjoyed the following reductions in annual pollution emissions:[44]

carbon monoxide emissions fell from 197 million tons to 89 million tons nitrogen oxide emissions fell from 27 million tons to 19 million tons sulfur dioxide emissions fell from 31 million tons to 15 million tons particulate emissions fell by 80% lead emissions fell by more than 98%

Goddamit, Obama is making stupid decisions daily. It is my right to drive a car with whatever the MPG it has. I work hard for this right, i sure aint going to start driving some Japanese style cissy minicar.

I suppose so many "Moderate" Americans agree with you, that they have all been buying American cars with whatever MPG they happen to have. That is why the Big 3 are doing so well. Oh, wait their broke becuase no one was buying thier cars. Obama and Bush should have never given any bailout money to the big three, they should have let them go broke. I wonder what kind of car selection would have existed? A possible good point for Obama, it would be pretty hard to do worse the past/current car companies management did.

On a certian level I don't mind low MPG American car, Oil and Gas contracts in the area of Canada I live in are quite lucrative and where do they get their money from?

  • 0

    yabits

There has been a nice reduction in pollution emissions. That doesn't negate the need to do better and increase reductions.

Of course not! Better laws made by liberals today will give conservatives something to brag about in three or more decades.

  • 0

    SuperLib

Good_job: Oh, wait their broke becuase no one was buying thier cars.

Toyota and GM sell roughly the same amount of cars. The problem isn't sales. It's profitability.
