AP reports:
"President Barack Obama's new fuel and emission standards for cars and trucks will save billions of barrels of oil but are expected to cost consumers an extra $1,300 per vehicle by the time the plan is complete in 2016."
A few thousand here, a few thousand there (cap n trade); really makes ya feel patriotic, as Joe Biden would say.

wow the TARGET for American cars in the future is SO LOW!!!!
30MPG!! lower (some by multiples say twice or three times) than cars produced and used elsewhere on the globe (already achieved) for the last 20, 30 years.
What can America teach or bring to the world... not much in this case!!
But they can and I have noticed in the last few years they are starting (having started from way way way way behind) to clean up their gready ways re over energy usage and carbon emissions. Can't really criticize developing countries say China, India ( or they aren't going listen so much) when places like the states are so not so developed themselves.
Anyway a move in the right direction to catch up... maybe in another decade can move forward to lead on this?

An extra 13 hundred? For that I can keep my old clunker alive for another four years and have enough left over for a new junky old car.

Well, soon the Americans will have GM, the nationalized car company, with Obama as head of operations.
That will followin the glorious footsteps as previous efforts of the same type. Anyone remember the Yugo, the Trabant, and the Proton?

WillB - "Well, soon the Americans will have GM, the nationalized car company."
That's due to the spectacular failure of the long line of GM managers who have consistantly failed to create systems that build cars that Americans want to buy.
Blaming Obama and hinting at Socialism only makes you look silly but thanks for the laugh all the same. :-)

Obama, the consumer is always right. The world economy is fuelled by supply and demand. Small tin cans aint going to be a hit in the USA.

Tesla Motors... look it up. We have the technology apparantly, and people are more than willing to buy, just not a big enough company yet. We've got our oil indepency sitting in our own back yard. This move is just making sure we start moving away from the old gasoline devoted cars to the newer, less polluting vehicles. If people keep being allowed to do things the same way and nothing improves, then we're going to keep doing it. This is just a little push to say, "Time to change the way we've been doing things for something better folks"

Say ther's still a lot of those big cars that just suck gasoline and diesel like it was jello shots still sitting in car lots around the country. Be my guest and go buy one of those cars that will allow you to burn just as much fuel as you can stand.
That's one of the biggest factors that has led to the decline in US car sells. Cars that have bigger engines, heavier weights and few miles per gallon.
So I'm glad that you republicans are ready and willing to buy those gas gusslers.
I think I like Obama's ideas about gas mileage and pollution controls. < :-)

Obama orders automakers to produce cars Americans don't want

LOL!!!! U.S. automakers have been producing cars Americans don't want for years.
Chrysler, Ford and GM, all American companies and all are either bankrupt, on the verge of bankruptcy or getting near the edge.
Yeah, Americans really want the status quo. Sales of American-made cars were declining even before the bush-GOP recession started, so to is silly to the point of lunacy.

Careful, you are exposing yet another 'liberal' hypocrisy:they are all about the unions,in theory, but when it comes to actually buying what union employees produce, Democrats suddenly feel the need to show their global side and go with a Volvo or a Honda.

"Democrats suddenly feel the need to show their global side and go with a Volvo or a Honda."
That's probably because they're reliable?

Agreed Madverts. People aren't going to be willing to "support" american if the American UAW is building junk. If another countries vehicles are more reliable and meet the consumers needs and desires, they're going to buy it.
