Gates was brought in to help manage the catastrophe that is the Iraq War, and to try to move forces into the theater where they always should have been in greater numbers-Afghanistan-so it stands to reason that Obama would want to keep Bush's man in place to see it through to the end.
Good luck, Secretary Gates, for another year or two. Bush/Cheney/Rummy must be proud of you!

Obama's picks - like the neo-con Gates and like his "Eisehower Republican" Clintonista financial advisors - have even won the praises of the one man the Left loathes and fears probably more than anyone alive:Karl Rove.

"Obama also planned to name Washington lawyer Eric Holder as attorney general"
What do we know about Eric Holder? His name is Eric Holder.

Friends and foes eh? Here is to hoping that combination leads to gridlock.

As a Clinton fan I am thrilled that Hillary will be secretary of state. That position couldn't have gone to a better person.

sarge: as for Eric Holder we know he paroned Mark Rich on the last day of Bill Clinton's presidency. I'm assuming of all of Obama's picks he will get the most grilling in confirmation hearings.
