Good on Obama... recession is slowing if not stopping after the free fall he was handed, and now the unemployment rate is starting to reverse. The Repubs. will no doubt try to find ways to be angry that the bush-led economic free-fall is ending and the economy improving, but fortunately most people know better and that's why they were slaughtered in the last election.
"McDonnell also said that, unlike Democrats, Republicans are committed to helping the uninsured"
Yeah... because in the weak-minded Republican thought process actually giving them insurance instead of not letting them be covered is not 'help'.

Hm wonder if he will get love from the far right? Nah, they will try and take credit for this one. I expect to see posts from our friends mentioning how this will vindicate President Bush....LOL
I wait and wait with eyes glued to my monitor for our friends to post.....:P

JoBigs: They'll be here... not to worry. Whenever a bush failure is mentioned it is 'Obama's (fill in the blank) now', but when it's clearly Obama turning said failures around it somehow becomes a bush victory.
How Obama went back in a time machine and started the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and sent the economy into a devastating free fall, and how bush became president in January, is all beyond me, but somehow the Republicans seem to think these things are so.

So the republicans want no change at all. That's all he had to say. < :-)

The unemployment rate has gone steadily up ever since Obama took office.
It was 7.2% the end of December 2008
January 2009 - 7.6%
February 2009 - 8.1%
March 2009 - 8.5%
April 2009 - 8.9%
May 2009 - 9.4%
June 2009 - 9.5%
July 2009 - 9.4%
Back in January, Obama pressed for an $800 billion economic “stimulus” package to turn the economy around. Though the bill largely consisted of increased spending on traditional liberal priorities, Obama claimed that it would “create or save” 3.5 million jobs. Obama’s economic advisers predicted that unemployment would rise to 9 percent by 2010 if Congress did not pass the stimulus bill, but that with the stimulus unemployment would stay below 8 percentage points.

RomeoRamen: "The unemployment rate has gone steadily up ever since Obama took office."
That's what happens when you inherit a free-fall. Just be thankful Obama has stemmed and started reversing it. If his predecessor were still bumbling around the WH it would probably be at more than 10% unemployed by now with no sign of slowing down.

Only in Obama-o-vision is the loss of 247,000 jobs in July seen as a good thing.

“We’ve begun to put the brakes on this recession and ... the worst may be behind us”
Heh, watch for Obama to "recalibrate" his words in the near future.

Could also be taken to mean the worst MAY NOT be behind us.

The 'numbers' don't reflect jobs created. They reflect the sad fact that a few hundred thousand unemployed Americans have stopped searching for work.
How this administration can talk about 'a recovery' only days after this report from August 5th staggers the imagination:
"NEW YORK (Reuters) – The percentage of U.S. homeowners who owe more than their house is worth will nearly double to 48 percent in 2011 from 26 percent at the end of March, portending another blow to the housing market, Deutsche Bank said on Wednesday."

SmithinJapan - RomeoRamenII is more than fine to conveniently ignore the fact the recession started under GWB in Dec 2007.
To people like him, stone cold facts like that are just irritating distractions.
I'm wondering what the GOP would be saying if GWB had actually been remotely competent at his job and handed Obama a surplus like Clinton handed Bush.

Bush didnt make or break the economy, that job belongs to Congress which was controlled by the dems.

We're all aware that Obama inherited a mess. No matter who got the office, the unemployment rate would have continued to rise. But that rise was slowed by Obama's efforts.
What really will be the bell weather is the next few months. Does the unemployment rate continue to go down or start to rise again. < :-)

"Obama inherited a mess"
Hey, no one forced it on him, he wanted it. And the mess he's making now is going to make the mess he inherited look like nothing.

Thank goodness your Predictions have a proven track record of being absolutely Wrong, young man.

sarge: "And the mess he's making now is going to make the mess he inherited look like nothing."
If this were sarge talking it might have an ounce of potential to go that way. Alas, it falls into the sarge prediction law of opposites. Regardless, what you're doing, sargie, is taking the fact that Obama has improved the things he inherited from bush, and suggesting that he's going to make them worse even though clearly that's not the case.
We know you're desperate, but grow up a little.

Actually Obama himself has said that they misread the severity of the downturn and the unemployment figures aren't panning out the way he said they would. But I've never really been one to hold the President responsible for the condition of the economy overall unless he also is the head of AIG.
The problem has always been two-fold....take care of immediate needs by doing whatever needs to be done, and then take care of how you fixed the problem in the future. The economy was close to collapse and drastic measures needed to be taken for the sake of the short-term. The stimulus package has helped, but some are wondering if it did enough or targeted the right areas. That's the real problem....because if you pass a massive spending package to help things in the near term it had better be effective because you have to find a way to bailout all of the bailouts and pay for them in the future. The worst case scenario is passing a massive package that does little in the short-term while creating a massive burden in the long-term.
In the end the stimulus and other assorted packages might be a mixed bag. The bailouts were a necessary evil to keep the system from collapsing, but the other measures don't seem to be panning out all that well. And at some point some politician will have to tell the American people that higher taxes are to come. That will have to be in Obama's second term, especially if he wants to pass things like health care reform in his first term.

Madverts: "young man"
The condecension and mischaracterization from Madverts continues.
smithinjapan: "sargie... grow up"
How about if you grow up and address me by my proper handle?
"Obama has improved the things he inherited from bush"
Really? He sure hasn't improved the employment situation or or national debt situation. What has he improved, exactly?

SuperLib: "The bailouts were a necessary evil"
They were not. All they've been is a huge addition to our national debt.

That's not necessarily true, Sarge. A company like AIG had to be bailed out. There was really no option. It would have triggered a collapse of financial institutions all over the world. Maybe a better option would have been for foreign countries to contribute since a lot of AIG's money went to protect foreign banks, but that's another debate.
And a lot of the bailouts are linked to stocks which probably will rise in the future, not to mention some stocks that pay dividends. We really won't know what the total cost of the bailouts and packages will be until we know what kind of profits the government will make because of the arrangements.

the image and respect for your country across the globe for a start. I'd say given what he has to work with and the plate he was given he's doing as well as he can. of course sarge you'd never be able to acknowledge that, even begrudgingly, but we know you like him really

Obama has not improved anything. The fact that the job losses were less then expected but still a quarter of a million jobs lost means things are still crappy not getting better. Obama has yet to have a good month that is as good as Bush's worst month economically speaking.
Obama is kissing every dictators ass in the world and all of America's enemies, thats not improving our image, its capitulation.
