Obama has criticized interrogation practices he says amount to torture and also has promised to close the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

True. And how about an apology to the inmates who were held for 7 years without charge?? US citizens were not held there because it is against their laws. So how about an apology to the rest of the world???????

Does the "Don't ask, don't tell" attitude apply to "intel gathering practices" too? Obama told his intelligence chiefs he "expects the Geneva Conventions to be honored". That's just a statement, not a directive. It could be interpreted as "Don't let me find out how you do it, and I won't directly ask you as long as its good for our country".

Better really define what "torture" is and have a plan-B. Turn them over to someone who extract the info for us.

That is the real question. Will Obama let our allies, like the Egyptians, do our torture for us, like they did during the Clinton administration. My guess is "yes" and that's not positive news for future enemies of the United States.

and while we are at, if we are going to drop torture, I hope it doesn't go in full reverse where we are going to put them in posh villas on the beach, with TVs and Playstations like we have for a few others.

Yeesh, how gullible can you guys be??? Lip service at face value? Like some of the wiser people posting here, all thats gonna happen is they get turned over to someone who doesn't have qualms about torturing, and doesn't care what others think.

The Gitmo posting for some soldiers was regarded as a vacation. A place for the most sadistic in the US military to put their sociopathic tendencies into practice. These are the soldiers who are destine to eventually commit some heinous crime on the mainland. The kind that the media describe as having been a good soldier but is at a lost as to why he killed his entire family and the neighbor he hardly new.

Everton2 - The Gitmo posting for some detainees was and is regarded as a welcome relief fron the miserable existence they had before they were captured ( not killed or tortured ). At Club Gitmo they get three square meals a day, a bed and a copy of the Koran, whereas before all they got was the last item.

Well, at last the US government has a president who can end so-called terrorism. We all know that bush never could because he was a total failure and always will be and neither could his daddy or nixon or reagan or any republican. Clinton almost did but bush's cronies had him impeached. Anyway, said terrorism is a product of economic injustice. Everybody knows waterboarding doesn7t work and just creates thousands more terrorists even though 99.999999 percent of Muslims ABHOR violence.
