This is happening more and more often in Canada.

SuperLib: Doesn't really seem that way at all. In fact, there's a reason this is news, and 'the worst shooting in history' in Toronto.

According to the Toronto police department shootings are up over 30% this year compared to last year in the city. We will just have to wait and see if this becomes a trend in the coming years.

I don't even take my cellphone out for a night out, let alone a gun. What is wrong with some people?

Hopefully they do not, although gang related violence has been a problem in TO for some time.

Why is the "L" always capitalized in my name?

Gee, let's play "Guess the socioeconomic status and ethnic background game". Been HUGE issues with black on black crime in TO for years - mostly by recent immigrant islanders who have issues with others from neighbouring islands. Add in the East Asian influence and well, you've got London all over again with crimes being committed by a certain group of individuals with turf wars and pay back. Which is very, very unfortunate for those individuals who fit the racial profile but not the socioeconomic background.

And Noliving, TO is relatively safe when you compare the gun stats to other cities its size worldwide. Just a few certain neighbourhoods and people to avoid.

i don't think there are that many east asians in the london area. maybe you are confusing with what the british defines as asians vs orientals (yes, i think they still use this term). for them, asians = indians, pakistanis, sri lankans, etc, while orientals = chinese, japanese, koreans, etc. recently in the british media, there were reportings of "asian gangs" exploiting and recruiting white british girls for work as prostitutes. all the gang members were of pakistani/indian descent.

Geez, I wish Mexico or most of the USA had the low crime rates of them folk way north of the border up there in Canada. I hope those nice mounted police in those cool red outfits get their man, or woman criminal ASAP!!

What does that have anything to do with what I have said?

You made the statement of the rates being up 30%. Just pointing out that being up 30% isn't near as bad as it sounds.

I think it is pretty bad if you happen to be one of the victims in that 30%.

I have a Japanese friend who moved to Toronto about 2 months ago to attend school. Just chatted with her and she is OK but certainly didn't expect something like this to happen in Toronto.

Alphappe, indeed but you need to look at the stats realistically and for its size, TO is probably among one of the safest cities in the world. Perspective and all that jazz.

Let's see, a "Caribbean themed" block party, jerk chicken, free booze, DJs,.

What a surprise that something like this happened.............

Seems the majority of killings are black on black, so if you aren't black then Toronto is probably a safe place to be.

So is Toronto going going to be the next Detroit??

    @smithinjapan

You're wrong man. I live here (Toronto), the shootings are becoming more and more common. The crime is increasing more and more. People get shot quite often in the black areas. A lot of the crimes here involve minorities. It's not reassuring when our mayor tells us our city is the safest in the world.

Nothing new for Scarborough. That area has always had racial problems within ethnicities. Actually, there are quite a few areas in TO that are downright ugly which anyone with brains knows to avoid. Could be any city in any country for that matter. Now on a whole, Canada is still pretty cool. That is, apart from the politically correct over sensitivity. Ugh.

@jforce Jane and Finch is a no go zone for me. As you said, this could happen anywhere with a lot of minorities. While what you say about political correctness is true, imagine if the liberals were in power? This country would become a mess rather quickly.
