I understand why so many buildings collapsed and the 1400 dead is just the tip of the iceberg. I visited Kathmandu for a few weeks a while back and the quality of the construction of homes and buildings was really third world standards. Most buildings are brick, concrete or stone which dont generally hold together in an earthquake. That plus the lack of strict building codes or enforcement of existing codes makes matters worse. The Nepalese people were very kind and I hope they get a lot of help from other countries to take care of the injured then perhaps they can rebuild their buildings to better withstand earthquakes but a 7-8 earthquake in any metropolitan first world country would be devastating but not as bad as what we will see coming out of Nepal during the next few days, weeks and months. Hopefully Sean Penn won't go there and ride around in his monogrammed golf cart trying to look like he is contributing to the releif work like did in Haiti. One big problem will be how to get water, food, heavy equipment and aid workers into that area as the roads are few and probably useless now and the Kathmandu airport's runway may be out of service until bulldozers can clear debris and patch it enough to allow military transport aircraft to stary delivering aid workers, supplies and machinery. Mother nature can be a real bitch sometimes!

Unless the article has been updated in the last 15 minutes it clearly describes the airport as being open.

Indian Air Force planes were allowed to bring in 43 tons of relief material, including tents and foods, and nearly 200 rescuers,

News sources list the aid already en route from other countries, including four Hercules aircraft carrying a field hospital among resources from Pakistan.

Our hearts are with the great, gorgeous and generous people of Nepal at this terrible time, especially those who make such a huge contribution to life here in Japan.

I'm praying that the Nepalese people have the courage and strength to face this trial and that those that are gone find the peace of god and the mourners his consolation.

Pray for Nepal .....

Such terrible news especially because Nepal's such a remote and hard to reach area anyway.

RIP
