Seems Pakistani men can be as immature as their Japanese counterparts. I say a bullet to the head for the mutilators. That should stem this kind of barbaric behavior.

I'll bet the woman who got her nose and ears cut off would like to be the one to mete out this punishment.

a cousin of the 19-year-old woman and wanted to marry her." You've got to be kidding me. anyway, this is justice..

Seems Pakistan is lacking in real men.

Welcome to Shariah Law. There is nothing particular surprising or Pakistani about this. Where you allow Shariah, you get Shariah.

The court on Monday also sentenced each man to 50 years in prison and told them to pay fines and compensation to the woman amounting to several thousand dollars

I doubt that 'several thousand dollars' would cover the cost of remedial cosmetic/reconstructive surgery for the poor woman. They need to stick a few more noughts on the end of that figure.

The ruling ignores the fact that instructing a barbaric act to be carried out on these two men (however much they may seem to deserve it) serves only to legitimise barbarity, in the same way that the death penalty does. It sends the message that there are times when it's OK to lay violent hands on a person as a means of revenge - which is no more than what the two men did. Sheer madness.

It sends the message that there are times when it's OK to lay violent hands on a person as a means of revenge" yup and they should be thankful that's all they got. Sometimes you need to really measure things

"which is no more than what the two men did" nope, you can blame the dog for biting you if you screwed with it. I was there minding its business.. Sheer madness" as you put it seems to be the way they are accepting things and so are most of people in the world.

So let me get this straight: One wanted to marry the woman, then when the family, not her, said no, he mutilates the woman? What men won't do for love, eh? Hate to think what he would have done if he hated her and wanted nothing to do with her! And you also got wonder why they said no? Could it be...because he is NUTS?

So WilliB, what article of Shariah law condones which behavior, the original mutilation or the punishment for it? Your bland accusations really leave a lot of questions unanswered. I would ask you to try and be more responsible, but I don't think it will do any good.

I'm not a big fan of eye for an eye, all considerations of poetic justice aside. I wouldn't want the state to replicate the barbarism of its least humane citizens. If the offense is serious enough that the state would even consider mutilation as a punishment, then I say hang them and be done with it.

As much as some folks don't like it, this is what cold hard justice is about. In some countries there are enough laws and enforcement to determine a fitting punishment for the crime (i.e loss of rights, financial compensation to the victim). In Pakistan they don't have enough of this so they go to the basic routes of, "do to others as you would have them do to you."

I'm pretty sure if this sentance is carried out those men are going to be experiencing exactly what they dished out, and they're also going to realize with a crystal clear perspective exactly what they've done for the rest of their lives.
