though the Palestinians could gain admission to certain U.N. bodies, including the International Criminal Court, that they could potentially use as a launching pad for action against Israel.

And just how would that work? Some kind of verdict that supports Hamas, a terrorist organization? Yeah, I'm sure the ICC would love to be put in that position.

Both sides need to return to the negotiating table. The little procedural games have to stop. In the end it just pushes the two sides farther apart.

Once Palestine joins the community of nations, it will of course be empowered to sign mutual defense treaties and form alliances with other states in the region. Then any Israeli police action (or reaction if you prefer) against attacks on its territory or citizens would almost certainly expand into a much larger conflict. I see the chances of this happening as better than 50-50.

The U.S. administration said for the first time Thursday that it would veto any Security Council resolution to recognize Palestinian statehood.

Nothing new and surprising there. Biggest failure of the UNSC/UN is that some states still have veto rights, should have been abolished decades ago and the UN would function better.

Oh joy, another seven days war. Because that worked out so well for the region last time they tried it. Israel has been preparing for just such an occasion for decades now.

Without the veto right none of the big players would join. Considering the UN has little/no authority now it would have even less without the U.S, Russia, and China. In all likelyhood it would just break up and we'd have a number of small clubs instead of our much beloved clusterduck that is the U.N.
