June 16: Bush announces withdrawal of 30,000 troops.

June 27: Pentagon announces deployment of 30,000 troops.

Petreus: I've decided that we are going to further reduce troop levels by sending another 30,000 to Iraq..... (to reporters)... Oh! You thought we meant reducing troops in IRAQ??? Hahaha... oh, you little ones! No no no... we're reducing our troops in the US!

    Sarge

Our military commanders are going to recommend troop withdrawals or deployments according to the situation on the ground. Next year our president will either follow those recommendations or just withdraw all of our troops in 16 months depending on if McCain or Obama is elected.

  • 0

    SezWho2

There must have been some awesome changes on the ground between June 16 and June 27. If those changes required a new deployment of troops, the changes couldn't have been entirely positive.

On the other hand, we may be led by a Commander-in-Chief who truly believes that the public has an attention span even shorter than his own.

Sarge, the American public - the majority of whom know what is good for America - think America is on the wrong track in Iraq and like Sen. Obama want to pull the troops out.

Then there's you. Why do your opinions continue to fly in the face of those of your fellow Americans?

Are you saying that the vast majority of your fellow Americans are stupid or something?

  • 0

    SushiSake3

I don't get this. I thought the Pentagon was pulling out the "surge" troops (30,000).

Now it's puttingthe same number back in again?

Wow, things must really be progressing on the ground over there...!

Maybe if the Pentagon rounded up all the War Supporters on JT and sent them over to Iraq as a Special JT Strike Force we'd see some real results, ie: the terrorists would be rolling around on the ground laughing and slapping themselves silly. ("You sent THOSE guys?? ha hahahahahahahahaha!")

Cool. I guess Iran's number is up.

Since the Iraqi government is set to assume control of Anbar Province in the next few days - the tenth of eighteen provinces they now control - it is clear Iraq is much better off than it was before the Surge began. I'm kinda hoping Obama continues his own surge - in the polls, I think it greatly increases the chances that Israel will strike Iran before our elections.

Sez, I think your first post really says it all.

I have to wonder if the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing, and the left hand is wishing the right hand would just quack gentle into that good night.

DoD's quarterly assessment to Congress pretty much shoots down the speculation (and hopes?) of some here that Iraq is still a quagmire of some sort - hey, haven't come across that word in a while, eh.

From “Measuring Security and Stability in Iraq” -

"Iraqi economy grew 4% in real terms in 2007 and is projected to grow 7% in real terms for 2008, reaching an estimated gross domestic product (GDP) of $60.9 billion. Oil production increases of 9-10% this year-coupled with the higher prices of oil-should drive growth in that sector and support increased government spending. The non-oil sector is likely to grow at 3%. Core inflation fell to 12% in 2007 compared to 32% in 2006…"

The 9010 report stresses that the gains made in Iraq are fragile and could easily be reversed. The unspoken warning is to avoid losing the gains made and setting dates for what would be a premature withdrawal. Yee-up, I'm guessing that's why our Democrat-controlled Congress once again gave Bush what he asked for - The Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, (now known as the Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2008), passed the US Congress on Thursday, June 19, 2008, with a vote of 268 to 155.

$162 billion in war funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    No time lines for withdrawal.

I just learned that when a soldier dies in combat, the spouse receives $800.00 and $200.00 per child.

    A politician gets how much?

  • 0

    sailwind

Do people actually read the article?

The deployments would replace troops currently there.

It's just a troop rotation to allow thirty thousands troops that have been there in some cases over 18 months now to go home. I think they deserve it don't you? There is no change in the numbers, the thirty thousand that will get to go home and be with their families again. I'm also pretty sure they are glad their replacements are finally on the way.

Crap Headline by the way, just leaves the impression that were actually increasing troops there.

  • 0

    SushiSake3

Skip, I read it was $500,000 per death.

  • 0

    SezWho2

    sailwind,

Yes, I think that people read the article--and struggle a bit to understand what is going on. We are not bringing the surge troops home if the number on the ground exceeds the number pre-surge.

sushi: No, its not. If it were, more would be dying.

"Pentagon to order 30,000 troops to Iraq in early 2009"

Heh, just when the War Supporters had convinced themselves the drawdown of the "surge" troops was actually for real - they get hit by this bombshell.

Expect more denial and delusion from the Radical Right.

June 16: Bush announces withdrawal of 30,000 troops.

June 27: Pentagon announces deployment of 30,000 troops.

So, at the and of the day, despite the ongoing annoying shrieking from the Right, nothing has really changed.

    Is anyone surprised?

  • 0

    SushiSake3

    Sez - I sourced this from military.com - figures could be pretty old [May 15, 2005] -

"President Bush signed into law Wednesday an increase in the death benefit from $12,000 to $100,000 for the next of kin of any military personnel killed in combat zones or in combat-related training since Oct. 7, 2001."

  • 0

    SushiSake3

Sarge - "Sushi - We're going to win this war without your support."

Sarge, you keep on saying that and you're continually wrong.

You've already lost the war - your support for this failed war has:

    • helped OBL realize his explicit aim of bankrupting American
    • bred thousands more terrorists
    • bred thousands more enemies of your country
    • ensured future US governments will have no choice but to burn up even more of the money that could be helping America and Americans on Iraq and Iraqis instead
    • destroyed Iraq
    • desatbilized the ME
    • emboldened Iran
    • led to the astronomical escalation of oil prices
    • absolutely buried the Republican party
    • trashed the names and reputations of everyone who supports the Republican party
    • buried the Neocon vision
    • trashed America's reputation worldwide
    • nuked any possible positive legacy Bush may ever dream of having.

That's the Reality you totally refuse to acknowledge.

Sarge, OBL and Al Quaeda have won this war thanks to YOUR support.

    That's the irony.....

    SushiSake3

Sarge - "Sushi - We're going to win this war without your support."

Have you got any proof to back up your claim, or are you just making stuff up like you usually do?

  • 0

    Sarge

Sushi - "Have you got any proof to back up your claim"

Are you claiming that you support our winning this war after everything you've posted to the contrary?

  • 0

    SushiSake3

Sarge, you're not noticing your country's economy going down in flames while your civilian commanders continue to wreck Iraq?

You're not just rearranging chairs on the Titanic, you're giving it a complete new paint job before she sinks beneath the waves :-)

  • 0

    SushiSake3

Sarge, you're also not noticing that while your country battles away valiantly in Iraq - - China is tying up resource supply deals in Africa, Australia and Europe - Iran is expanding its influence - US national debt has more than doubled from $4 trillion ot $9 trillion - ME wealth funds are buying up big US companies (JP Morgan, etc.) and properties thanks to the discount deals created by the plunging US dollar your president promised to keep strong - your nation's social security system is evaporating - your country's wealth is dissapearing to China, defence and oil companies - your nation's environment is being steadily degraded thanks to the debilitating stealth environmental policies Bush and co. have introduced behind your back - the spending power of Americans' dollars is plummeting - you're facing a housing, financial and banking sector meltdown, and a credit crunch to boot.

All the while you've got your eyes focused on killing a few tinpot army recruits in a country you probably couldn't point to on a map.

THAT'S the reality, and that's why you're losing even when you think you're winning.

The bottom line is the Pentagon can order as many troops as they like to Iraq, and whether the country winds up as a stable democracy in a few years or not, you and your country will have lost IMMENSELY more than you will ever have gained, and your and your nation's finances will - actually have - been plundered beyond your wildest imagination.

It's really irrelevant what you, RomeoRamen, super delegate, Sailwind, RedMeatKoolAid and whoever wlse who supports this failed war think or even want to believe - you and your nation have lost beyond your wildest imagination and there will come a time when your kids and your grandchildren wonder what the heck you were thinking when you shamefully admit you supported Bush on Iraq.

It's just so sad that Bush and the military commanders are micromanaging soldiers' lives in Iraq while they are totally missing the big picture at home.

There's a tsunami coming Sarge, but I doubt you'll even be awake to see it.

    Sorry you can't see it.

  • 0

    Sarge

Sushi - So, you're not claiming to support our winning this war. Just wanted to make sure.

"your country's economy going down in flames"

Sushi, if the U.S. economy ever went down in flames, what do you think would happen to the global economy? No, never mind, this is getting off topic - gosh darn it, this is what happens when I respond to your posts...

  • 0

    SushiSake3

Sarge, so you agree that your country has lost immensely while your military has been battling it out in Iraq?

  • 0

    Sarge

Sushi - I've got some news - the Iraq war hasn't been lost, and it's not going to be lost unless Americans have a colossal brain fart and elect Barack Obama president.

  • 0

    SushiSake3

Sarge - newsflash - you've lost pretty much everything else.

    Iraq barely matters any more.

And if your countrymen are braindead enough to vote John McCain in as president, you can be sure things will only get worse.

Heh, so you agree that your country has lost immensely while your military has been battling it out in Iraq....that's telling...

  • 0

    SushiSake3

Adding 30,000 more troops directly after withdrawing **the same number of troops **is bad enough as it is and clearly shows things aren't really improving (otherwise why not implement a REAL drawdown??).

It's all just rearranging chairs on the Titanic but you still can't see it.

  • 0

    Sarge

Sushi - "Iraq barely matters anymore"

Then why do you keep whining about it?

  • 0

    DXXJP

Sarge why do you champion this war yet duck and hide in japan. When are you going to directly get involved in this failure you so proudly support tic tic ticking on your keyboard from japan.

Are your tax dollars helping the war? Are you giving to the rebuilding of Iraq?

Sarge they need another 30,000 are you going to lace up your boots and deploy or are you going to get a new book of quotes to tic tic tic away at your keyboard in support.

All you drum beaters make quaint little posts yet you wont suit up, if you feel so strong about it join the fight dont hide in japan.

Saddam had better convictions then all the right wiggers here.

    SushiSake3,

Thanks for the numbers on the death benefits. I'm just wondering, though, how that relates to my post. I'm not saying it doesn't. I just don't see the connection.

  • 0

    SezWho2

    Sarge,

I think that SushiSake3 is not saying that we cannot achieve successful military results in Iraq. I think what he is saying is that any victory we achieve will be a Pyrrhic one.

The US is obviously a great country with vast resources. However, those resources are not inexhaustible--whether measured in dollars, lives, the willingness to prosecute foreign wars, or the good will of other countries who might pick up the slack for us.

I think it is true that we have already lost significant stores of all the above. The question is whether there is a way to replenish them. McCain pressing on to victory and overseeing a flowering of democracy in the Middle East does not appear to me to be the most likely scenario for regaining what we have lost.

  • 0

    SushiSake3

Sez, I was posting those death benefit numbers in repoy to SkipTheSong's posts.

    SushiSake3

Sex - " I think what [SushiSake3] is saying is that any victory we achieve will be a Pyrrhic one."

    Precisely.

"I think it is true that we have already lost significant stores of all the above. The question is whether there is a way to replenish them. McCain pressing on to victory and overseeing a flowering of democracy in the Middle East does not appear to me to be the most likely scenario for regaining what we have lost."

    Bang on the mark.

Bush and McCain and co. are supposed to represent Americans.

With their strategy in Iraq, they are doing a far better job at representing Iraqis.

Obama - on the other hand - actually does want to represent Americans.

    That is a big difference.

  • 0

    Sarge

DXXJP - "Sarge they need another 30,000 are you going to lace up your boots and deploy"

Since this question remains I guess I'll answer it once more. Nah, they won't let me re-enlist - too old.

    RedMeatKoolAid

Obama's move to the center won't be limited to his position on guns. It will also include a significant modification of his 'position' on Iraq. And it'll be easy for him to change because it is little more than statements he puts up on his website.

  • 0

    SushiSake3

RedMeat - "And it'll be easy for him to change because it is little more than statements he puts up on his website."

Heh, hilarious to see you've actually successfully convinced yourself that that is true.

Anyone who thinks the MSM portrays Obama as being far from the center doesn't get their news from American sources.
