Common Sense to Perry: You could not handle Obama in debate

Darn, I sure needed that good laugh.

But with Perry's Iowa poll numbers putting him in the mid-single digits, even lower than native Iowan Michelle Bachmann, how could he ever find himself debating the President? At least Perry won't have to worry about any aggravating debate prep ruining his Christmas season since it looks like he won't have many after January 2012.

Perry: "I don't want more revenue in Washington D.C.'s hands. I want more revenue in the private sector job creators' hands."

And here we have a major difference between conservatism / Rick Perry and liberalism / Barack Obama.

Obama: I'm going to wait until everyone is voted off the island."

Ha ha, good one, Mr. President!

Heck, any of the Republican candidates would wipe the floor in a debate with Obama. Still, Obama's charisma will probably carry him to re-election.

Cain leading the polls just shows that Republicans have written off the presidential election. Now it's just them trying to establish who has the leading faction in the party.

Anybody can handle Obama in a debate.

But then there is the question how the media spins the event.

In going against Obama, he will have to handle the entire mainstream media, which (with exception of some isolate dissidents) solidly partisan.

  • 2

    TorafusuTorasan

    @WilliB, "entire mainstream media"

I thought the latest lingo was "lamestream media."

Who are these isolated dissidents you listen to? Surely not FOX, Rush, and G. Beck? No spin there, right?

If I follow your thinking: Corporations are people, but media corporations aren't. They are monolithic automatons.

Perry is a dope. His brand of retail sell out to the highest bidder politics may work in Texas but will not play nationally. He will not get a chance to debate Obama. He will be long gone before the debates happen.

The front runner, Cain, has issued instructions that he is not to be talked to by his staff. He must be working on his next economics plan, maybe 10-10-10, and needs silence to figure that out.

Perry is just not good at debating. Even Fox News made fun of his "is it before, or before the after, or before" thing. But he has to get better if he wants to catch up to Romney or Cain. Otherwise, it all wouldn't matter.

    TorafusuTorasan:

" Surely not FOX, Rush, and G. Beck? No spin there, right? "

Whereever there are humans, there is spin. But compared to their liberal counterparts, the 3 you mention are virtual angels at even-handedness.

Now look at the various alphabet acronyms that compose the mainstream media landscape. With the exception of the evil and and much lambasted Fox, they are all solidly US democrat oriented. In fact, an extension of the Obama campaign, on which it can solidly rely.

Hence, my observation: Whoever discusses Obama takes on not a candidate, but an entire opinion-making industry with the exception of one.

That´s a fact. Like it or not.

Have you seen Perry in the debates? Obviously other Republicans have and they are concerned. Do you think they are concerned because they are falling victim to liberal spin or because they saw him as well?

I'd worry that without the teleprompter and the softball questions Obama will be lost.

I'm not concerned about his debating skills; I'm worried about his policies. His tax plan is to allow the current system to stay in place while instituting an optional 20% "flat tax" plan which would benefit - wait for it - the wealthy! So the average tax payer will see no relief while the wealthy will see a continued fall in their contributions to society. And Perry says he isn't worried about the ramifications on the deficit - wait! - wasn't this the party so concerned about the deficit that it brought the US to the edge of default just a few weeks ago?

    There's responsibility for you.

Seems like we went through this with Bush, where upper rates were lowered, resulting in continued concentration of wealth and companies sitting on an historically large pile of cash. Seems like this has not been so conducive towards creating jobs and thus ending the recession. Seems like this man could have the debating skills of W.E.B. Du Bois and he'd still lose because of his stands on the issues.

Still, it will be interesting to see how Cain's impending implosion will affect his polling.

Funny one, Lieberman, you're a true original.

Anyway, regardless of Obama's limitations as a debater (teleprompter or not), he is generally eager and able to make a cogent case and speak as a reasonable and literate human. Rick Perry is the rhetorical equivalent of a bacon chili cheeseburger, i.e. satisfies the belly, which might go down well among a certain breed of American simpleton.

"Seems like we went through this with Bush"

Under the Bush tax cuts everyone who pays taxes got a tax cut.

Thanks for the reminder, Serrano. Remember, also, on a slave ship, everyone had a seat - it's just that some were nicer than others, and expectations of the destination were quite different.

Watching Perry try to enunciate a clear sentence in Engilsh is like watching a chimpanzee play with a locked suitcase. And I say that as a libertarian leaning conservative. Mitt Romney would eviscerate Obama, as would Newt Gingrich. But Perry? Sorry. He shoulda stayed down on the farm.

As for the tax issue, the problem isnt with revenue, it's with spending. Too much of the latter- it's increased by more than 80% in the last decade. A simplified system with less loopholes would benefit everyone, except for lobbyists and accountants.

Someone needs to tell Perry he's not allowed to bring his gun.

Anybody can handle Obama in a debate.

Anoyone except John McCain. He lost every debate against Obama.

No, please go back to Texas. Drop Bachmann off in Minnesota while you're at it.

I want Romney to straighten his stuff out, I want to hear Ron Paul for once (he's in third or second in a number of states right now), and I want Cain to...

Anybody seen Rick Perry's latest "performance" in front of a crowd in New Hampshire?

Imagine Howard Dean's "scream" being drawn out for over 30 minutes. Actually, the thing Perry's rambling nuttiness reminded me of is Ronnie Blakley's crazy rambling character, Barbara Jean, in Altman's movie Nashville.

A movie, interestingly enough, about a presidential campaign.

Yes, I did catch that on The Daily Show. WOW. Seriously. An all-caps. WOW.

"Live free or die! Yeah! Yipee kay yea mothballfudgers!"

He kept his pants on, I'll give him that.
