If only someone had been there with a gun to stop him! Oh - okay. And they were police. Imagine if they had been four yahoos with no training.
Alistair Carnell
Hey Bruce, get the police in Hornsby back on the Range.

The suspect approached the officers with a large carving knife. The shooting would've justified if they'd hit their target. Goes to show that firearm marksmanship is a perishable skill. And that all police departments need constant cycle training.

That's just the way it is.

Don't they have tasers?

"The officers had access to other weapons including a Taser and batons,......"
Lloyd Weems
Well, if they hadn't drawn their weapons they couldn't have shot anyone.
MaximumMan
they never heard of tasers?

What do you all really know about the situation? It is very easy to criticise from in front of your computer screen. Try real life on for size.

Wow... I agree those guys need to hit the firing range much more often. Police officers that end up harming more bystanders than the culprit is a bad sign on weapons training.

Well I know one thing. Its easy to score multiple headshots and center mass keyhole after keyhole under "controlled" conditions at some firing range with no time limits.
I also know that 10-11 hrs into your shift and suddenly encountering a dangerous situation, the adrenaline starts pumping. Thus, your accuracy is only about 60% of what it was under those "controlled" conditions at the firing range.

Easy to criticize the police, but the article above does not say specifically that they missed. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. Bullets can go right through a perp and keep travelling.
