Popcorn disappearing from British cinemas

LONDON —

The credits are rolling in Britain for the time-honored cinematic tradition of munching popcorn at the movies—a newspaper reported Sunday that increasing numbers of cinemas are banning it.

A combination of health-conscious cinemagoers rejecting sugar-coated popcorn and disgust at its distinctive smell is steadily spelling “The End” for the snack in some arthouse cinema chains, the Observer reported.

It quoted Daniel Broch, the owner of the renowned Everyman cinema in London’s upmarket Hampstead district, who recently bought 17 more venues.

“I will de-popcorn every new venue I acquire,” he said. “It has a disproportionate influence on the space in terms of its overwhelming smell, the cultural idea of it and the operational problems created by the mess it produces.

“I’m not saying no popcorn is better than popcorn,” he added. “But I am saying there is no way in which it fits with the culturally sophisticated brand I wish to sell.”

The Picturehouse Cinema, a chain of 19 cinemas across Britain, will experiment with popcorn-free screenings in September.

“Popcorn is a contentious issue. Lots of people absolutely hate it and have asked us to ban it, so we’re going to do exactly that,” the group’s head of media, Gabriel Swartland, told the Observer.

“If it’s a success, and I’ve no reason to suspect it won’t be, we’ll roll it out across all our cinemas and make it a permanent fixture,” said Swartland.

But other cinemas which tried to go popcorn-free found customers demanded it.

“Audiences in three venues… began asking for popcorn, so we provided it,” said Richard Napper, the marketing director of the Curzon chain.

I only go to the cinema for the popcorn. Otherwise, it's an easy wait for the DVD.

popcorn is an American mass culture feature that needs to be eradicated.

I once went to a cinema in Osaka that didn't serve popcorn... you could get beer, and convenience store junk at inflated prices (pretz, etc.), but that was it. I couldn't believe it; in fact, I couldn't watch the movie... I up and left about half-way through because it just wasn't a movie without the popcorn.

Now, I agree with the problem of smell, but the majority of that is excessive oil and the artificial butter; the latter of which you can definitely do without.

Good. That's one of the things I didn't like when I used to go to movie theatres - the sound of people eating popcorn. Really irritating.

I like my popcorn but only with salt added. The buttery and the coated stuff you can keep. Vile stuff, IMO.

So personally I don't mind if I can't get popcorn at the cinema, usually buy a packed or two of nuts anyway.

The best popcorn ( eaten outside movie theatres, of course ): Cracker Jack!

I read about this in another paper and he seems to hint that he will replace popcorn with something else, apparently he is bringing in something he already has a financial stake in so we will have to wait and see what he replaces popcorn with.

a movie without popcorn - how Uncivilized - even the caveman had popcorn to watch fireflies at night.

Ogie - The caveman watched the fireflies and munched his popcorn OUTSIDE.

First, I agree with kinniku. Sugar-coated popcorn is nasty. Second, I can't imagine not having plain popcorn at a movie theater, but if that's what people really want, why not? Maybe they can eat apples and carrots, in this way continuing to annoy folks around them with eating sounds and thus maintaining the tradition.

The soundtracks are so loud it's difficult to imagine being disturbed by the sound of slightly soggy buttered popcorn being masticated.

Never heard of sugar-coated popcorn. I take mine with salt and butter. I hope the food nazi's don't come to the movie house in my country.
