The Vatican did not help. Italy was in on the extermination of Jews.

Shoot, I have my doubts about some of the stuff said about the Nazi's after WW2 (the propoganda machine was very effective), but there really isn't any doubt about the holocaust - it was very well documented by the Germans themselves.

Pope Pius XII, the last real Pope, allegedly did not do enough to help the Jews. I wonder why. The way I see it, he either:

knew about the holocaust and he supported it (very unlikely).

knew about the holocaust, but was powerless to help (possible).

did not know about it because it was kept secret, or he assumed it was war propaganda as in all other wars (very possible).

“We Romans saved so many Jews during the war, all under orders of the pope,” he said. “It goes against history to judge him negatively.”

Hitler's children were not very nice. The Pope's children lived in places conquered by Hitler's children. Discretion was necessary.

Pope Benedict is Catholic. What a surprise for a lot of people. He probably knows more about Pius XII than most of us. Read Benedict's book on "Truth and Tolerance", twice.

Yes, so quietly, in fact, that Jews themselves were unaware they were being saved, even as they were being marched off to die in concentration camps. So quietly, in fact, that the Church wasn't even aware it was "saving" Jews.

Horse puckey. The Vatican and the Catholic Church saw the purges as an opportunity to make inroads against Judaism in Germany and Italy, and throughout the whole of Western and Northern Europe. So they hopped into bed gleefully with Fascists because they thought they could craft a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Imagine the Church's surprise when the Nazi's went into full-out Pagan worship of Hitler the man and so-called "Pure Aryans" as a "race." The Nazi's all but booted the Church out of the Reich, and the Church expended enormous amounts of clout, money, and favors just to keep the Facists from rolling over Vatican City with mechanized armour. But by then, the Jews had been all but eliminated from Germany society.

They should empty that place, let all the secrets out and make it into a casino habited by only the sexiest Italian women....
