He is only (verbally) backpeddling because nothing else was working. The Catholic church is in a nosediving freefall. My only complaint is that there were far better reasons for people to rail against the church before this came up. What is driving this is pedo hysteria more than actual issues. That aspect is sad to watch. I would put the church's stance against AIDS preventing condoms, a stance which has no doubt KILLED tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands, way ahead of the sex abuse scandal anyday.

Mist, youre forgetting quality of life. For both men and women. The Queen harkens about special contribution, as if economics is the issue. She really got herself tongue twisted there, England needs the Church now more than ever. The Scots who are the money bags though, are trying to make out how bad England can be all the time, so they dont have to face their own redemption, where economics is concerned. Go Benedict!
