there goes the pope again, kissing up...
Of course, I respect the idea of giving respect to others, but I like the idea of extending hands out at the same time. As for Jordan’s King Abdullah II, man he's high on my list of great people, anyone that can catch a fine lady like Queen Rania is ok in my book.
The pope is one of the last people that should be speaking on behalf of the west. just as much as I think Islam is a backwards religion, Roman Catholicism is right next to it.

I often disagree with what this pope says, and I don't know if he's being sincere in this case, but it's a step up from what he's said in the past. Respecting differences, despite not necessarily agreeing with them, is an important step in recognizing the rights of others to believe in what they choose (at least in terms of religion), and a big step in learning to live aside one another. Of course, both sides (or third or fourth sides) can't tread on the other's respect and expect to get it.
Anyway, his comments can't hurt.

Of course the church and Jews share a bond... Christianity is, after all, basically nothing else but a Jewish reform movement.
Now, I would like to hear an islamic cleric expressing respect for Jews... but I am not holding my breath.

...and Judaism is a Zorostarian reform movement. The Jews did nothing when the Romans were feeding the Christians to the lions and the Catholic church did nothing when Hitler killed 7 million Jews. 'Inseparable bond' since 1946, so in 2000 years they get along for 60; works out to 3% of the time.

God's finger through history is written in the Bible. This is our inseparable bond. It is not a game of Balderdash where one trys to convince the other something that is not true but one of belief in a creator God who has acted in history and told us about himself. It is not a religion of identity but one of revelation. We share this with the Muslims as well.

...told his audience at the mosque that Muslims and Christians should be partners in the "noble purpose of serving mankind" to protect society against the "excess of the unbridled ego."... He is a truthful good man. Gets himself into trouble, but then again he is only human. A light shining on the hill for all to see.

He should speak out to the Jews about the unchristian way they treat Palestinians. If he has trouble writing his speech, Moses book has a few lines... They shall not kill... Thy shall love thy neighbour... Thy shall not covert thy neighbours goods...

It's hard for me to see how the Pope expects to mend ties with the Islamic world by stating that the Church and the Jews share an inseparable bond.
In the first place, it is not quite true that the bond is inseparable. It seems to me that a history of Christian prejudice against Jews (and, may I say, vice versa) shows otherwise. Sociology trumps abstract theology.
In the second place, this can sound a lot like "us" versus "them". What about the bond between the Church and Islam? Is there one?

The Muslim Brotherhood seems to be PO'd at pretty much everyone.

Well, yeah, but then there is that small matter of family lineage in the case of the historical figure of Jesus Christ.
And of course Islam's division of the entire world into two 'houses', one of submsission (to Islam) and the other of war (against Islam) really ameliorates tensions...
