Nice of the Pope to visit the US prison system, largest in the world. Not a single comment on the fact that about 1% of American adults are in prison today, a rate unheard of in any other country.

A breakdown in crimes committed and ethnicity would be interesting to see. And a start to reduce the inmate population.

Drug offenses are minimal to me except if sold to children and violent criminals need the space to stay for a while. And the country club atmosphere needs to go. Prison should not be a refuge as some low level inmates visit from time to time.

If only the Pope visited a higher level prison he may see a different population attitude.

In an apparent effort to reshape the discussion, though, the Vatican said not all the victims had been abused by clergy; some were violated by relatives

Umm...no...that would be MOST were violated by relatives. I hope the Pope's new tack for the issue will help it blow over. The priest rate of abuse is lower than for the general population. Also, most of the abuses came decades ago when NO ONE was paying much attention and all orgs were doing much the same. I despise the Catholic Church, but expecting them to be so far ahead on an issue like that is unreasonable. And when I say ahead, I don't mean "correct", "true", or "right". I simply mean the state of the times. For example:

He assured them that he believes them and that bishops who covered up for abusers will be made to answer for what they did.

To believe all who claim abuse is a sign of the times as is to condemn all accused. In the past it was required to have EVIDENCE. Now, decades later, there isn't any. But all accused will be made to answer anyway.

Further, there was no cover up. There just wasn't evidence to make a disclosure on. But I know already that in these times, such basic logic will be tossed out in favor of accusatory emotionalism.

The South Park episode "red Hot Catholic Love" was bag on this one.

Ireland is ground zero for the church’s sexual abuse crisis outside of the U.S. The overwhelmingly Catholic country also recently legalized

Heh, you don't say.

During the meeting with the bishops, Francis referred to gay marriage for the first time in his U.S. trip, lamenting the new reality

Lamenting? Why doesn't he bend his beliefs on this topic, like most of his liberal followers? Why does he lament when his "flock" are accepting same sex marriage?

A breakdown in crimes committed and ethnicity would be interesting to see.

Good point. Since you bring that up, I'm willing to go out on a limb and say there are lots of immigrants (who haven't been deported yet- for some reason or other), hispanics and blacks. In fact, they make up the majority in prisons. Sorry, no links to support my statement. All you americans out there know this is so.

There's a metaphor.

The pope has agreed to create a new Vatican tribunal to prosecute bishops who failed to protect their flock,

Apparently that has yet to include expulsion of and prosecution of those who have hidden behind the vestments that shielded their rapes. Good Pope Francis; maybe those of the Sainted John Paul's investigation should be enumerated as protectors of the rapists?
