    It was beer anyway.

What a pack of idiots the officials must be. Who cares if the guy had a leak in the water, its an open air reservoir l am sure that worse things than that end up in the water.....

    Kwaabish

And the pounds of Canada Geese droppings are not a reason to flush?

    NetNinja,

Ok the guy took a leak in it. You do realise that by being an open air reservoir there would be birds and animals peeing in it all the time not to mention dead animals etc. And you are worrying about at most 500 ml to litre (extreme) of pee in 8 million gallons.

    Get real

    @Spidapig24

    ;-) I know you're right. I'm not denying it.

I won't drink it. This story reminds me of the movie "Jackass". I'm not drinking that water.

You say he took a leak in it. I say: Slim Shady here took a piss in it.

You speak so tactfully. Birds and animals peeing in it. "Peeing" a word used by little kids - a somewhat innocent image" Mommy I have to pee.....That kid is so cute.

I say" excretions and feces in your water" Hordes of bacteria and unknown micro-organisms that plague the bowels and kidneys. On top of that, this is a treatment facility operated by the government? They don't usually spend a lot of money on things.

He said he worried about the possibility of chlamydia or AIDS from blood in urine

    .

Come on Spidapig24, I've read your posts. Give it to em straight.

If you really think the glass is Half-Full drink up.
Yes, i would pull the plug on that 8 million gallons of water and put a time lapse camera on it so I could watch it again.

You had better believe I have this super expensive water filter system on my kitchen faucet. I'm taking every measure I can to provide clean water in my household.

    NetNinja,

I dont get your arguement you are worried about 1 guy urinating in the water. And you are happy to throw away 8 million gallons of water because of it. If he hadnt done that the water would have been used correct? What about the animals and birds that urinate and deficate in the water, the dead animals (birds etc) that fall in the water. The contamination, pollution that can settle on the water surface. That isnt a problem but when 1 person urinates in the water its a big bad thing... You obviously never swin in the beach or a pool then?

    Got to agree with spidapig24.

There are many places on this globe where they would LOVED that water as their own supply is way worse. Typical for people that take "clean" water for granted and their given right.

    Stranger_in_a_Strange_Land

    Got to agree with spidapig24.

I'm sure there are plenty of ducks peeing in the river water that finds it's way into my faucet. It's still super clean. One of the many benefits of living in the countryside.

Just feel that the action was way extreme. Drinkable fresh water is becoming a rarity on this globe yet we use it to flush our toilets, water our plants, wash our cars, take baths in it, etc.

Said I don't live far away from our water-treatment plant. ;) You know those that recycle rivers, etc.

Ducks, fish, etc don't only pee in it they also perform other activities. :P

    Stranger_in_a_Strange_Land

Yes, I totally agree. Ridiculous and wasteful action.

Guess I didn't say that clearly.

I'm not disagreeing with Spidapig. It is a total waste. BUT......the local officials did the right thing. I know you don't like this answer but they did the right thing. Punish that guy and not the city officials. Lawyers would have had a field day with that kind of story. Heads would have rolled, especially politicians and public workers IF the public knew they served them a cold glass of piss water.

You just can't. I agree it sucks to waste the water. You could even say that those Americans are spoiled. Too good for a fly in the ointment. This is just the way it's going to go down........the drain.

I would have pulled the plug too.

You see guys, not saying you're wrong, but somebody did some long division on this. Adding in all kinds of factors and when they had their bottom line numbers, I'm sure it came to be more expensive to ship it off to the needy and / or the risk of lawsuits. The situation was already a FAIL......but if they had kept that water the lawsuits might have been EPIC. You might not agree but you'd have to do some serious calculations to decide which was a wiser decision. It's the kind of math that gives most people headaches.

  • 2

    Spidapig24

    NetNinja,

How did they do the right thing? Really.....

Why would the lawsuits be epic. WHAT!!!

Do you realise if the guy urinated 500 ml of urine into the resevoir it would be 500 ml in 30,283,294 litres. What is the ppm of that? Seriously they are WASTING that much water for nothing!!!

The officials who released the water should be fired.... This is beyond idiotic they are worried about a bit of urine in a open air resevoir. What about all the other crap that falls in their. Whats next ever time a bird craps in the water dump it all. After all the bird may have bird flu.

It just goes to show some Americans have no sense at all..... And NetNinja l cant understand who you can defend the position it simply defies logic. I guess you have never been to a country that has a water shortage...

"animals such as ducks contribute waste routinely"

    Thanks for the contributions, ducks!

I bet every dog in the county has peed in the reservoir in addition to the ducks, the raccoons, the squirrels, and the neighbor's cat. In addition to urine being a sterile fluid, this urine was particularly sterile, due, as mentioned above, to the alcohol content. People don't like to think about it, but EVERY community has "stuff" in the water. Whatever, though, as the dumped water will go somewhere, and won't really be wasted in the grand scheme of things.

Awful. I can't believe someone made this decision. What the heck were they thinking?

'It is a total waste".... well that made me laugh.

    Stranger_in_a_Strange_Land

If I lived in Portland, I would wait until they filled the reservoir back up and then go pee in it myself.

    Alphaape

I wonder how many people have pissed in the resevoir that were not caught on camea? I can see if he did it in the treatment facility, but this was in nature. They add chemicals to the water before it gets into the tap.

Who cares. 8 million gallons is nothing in a city where it rains 10 months of the year and has 2 massive rivers running thru it.

Like the article said if it was Texas it might be something but in that part of Oregon that 8 million gallons is replaced every 30 minutes.

    Jason Lok

What's with all the fuss about one guy urinating once when ducks are shitting and dying all of the open-air reservoirs all the time? Not to mention "animal carcasses, paint cans, construction material, fireworks debris and even the plastic bags people use to scoop up after their dogs"? If people were that concerned (and I'm talking about the whiners on this comments section) about fresh water, lobby the city to cover up the reservoirs as soon as possible. Then install an industrial filtering system on your water supply, hypochondriacs!

I guess there isn't a water shortage in Portland. Still, dumb.
