What a stupid thing to say

thepro: Why is it stupid? He's just admitting what so many other Republicans deny.

Since Powell knowingly has illegal immigrants working for him, shouldn't he be fined and/or jailed?

"Powell said he’s not giving up on the Republican Party, even in the face of a rightward drift, and says it might actually help Obama if Republicans win the House in November and gain responsibility for driving policy, not just opposing Democrats."
Powell's actually got a very good point here. If the Republicans DO win the house they might stop the simply childish tantrums (they say 'no' like my 18 month old nephew regardless of what you are saying, except that the Republicans would also say now if I drew up legislation to give them a cookie) and try to CONTRIBUTE something. Of course, then the reverse will likely be true -- the Dems will simply say no. I've said it before, I'll say it again; while the Democrats have a head on their shoulders and the Republicans have literally lost touch with reality, BOTH parties simply counter the opposition, and US politics is dead-locked.

The status they should be given is that of a "deportee." There was a woman a few years back that was being nominated for the Supreme Court or some other post, and it came out that she had used illegal domestic help (i.e. a nanny) for her children. Thus her name was withdrawn (I believe she may have been a Dem but not sure). No matter what party she was affiliated with or that of Gen Powell, the actions of those who can afford to hire illegals is really the problem.
Both Powell and the person I mentioned have the means to get help hired out, but they want to go with the cheapest option to save money. In the case of people who hire nanny's and not pay their taxes (Social Security, health care, etc) or who hires day laborers, they don't see it as a problem since after the work is done, those people are out of their sight. But they don't realize the rest of society has to pick up the tab in the forms of socail services to these people that they don't feel like paying legally.

Obama deliberately engages and provokes the fringe elements.
He then uses the reaction to paint the whole opposition as such. He could easily end the speculation about his past by releasing his passport records and his university transcripts (one of the fringe theories is that there are whole years of his uni life unaccounted for) but he chooses not to, so that he can play the victim of 'racism' and 'extremism.' Even when it is not true: "They talk about me like a dog." It's straight out of the Alinsky playbook his radical mentors schooled him with.

Typical misrepresentation of the issue by a Republican in Name Only who suffers from sour grapes. Republicans aren't "anti-immigration," they are anti-illegal immigration. Proof of this is that in the past it was the Republicans who pushed to increase the number of H1B visas issued every year. The question Powell won't answer is why should Mexicans get an unfair advantage in immigration by being granted citizenship when everyone else from Africa, Asia, Europe and South America has to wait their turn and go through the legal immigration process? Special treatment of one group (Mexicans) is de facto racism.

Excellent post, bebert61. I laughed to see the ad next to it
AUSTRALIA is looking for skilled immigrants.
How I wish we could implement the kind of policy Australia or Canada has. Even Sweden, liberal Lefty utopian Sweden, does not grant citizenship to 'anchor babies.'

Maybe if the illegals weren't here, Powell could have legal Americans who need jobs working on his house.

Good to know Powell is doing his part to lower the unemployment rate of those who're legally living in America.

"He added: “They’re all over my house, doing things whenever I call for repairs, and I’m sure you’ve seen them at your house. We’ve got to find a way to bring these people out of the darkness and give them some kind of status.”"
"Why is it stupid? He's just admitting what so many other Republicans deny."
Yes and LOL YES! Smith, you are the MAN! Colin is just not going to lie as everyone else does. He is not running for office and he is not doing anything illegal. Anyone who has lived in California probably knows someone who has a live in illegal or several contracts with illegals or who has contracts with people who are known to hire illegals.
Watch the Republicans pull out their indignation flag and throw it. This from AlphaApe: "actions of those who can afford to hire illegals is really the problem" Yeah. Alpha. Yesterday you were calling Obama an uncle Tom for thinking about "balck" people and today Colin Powell is one of those folks too rich to hire what... white Americans? People hire illegals because they are cheap and work hard. The crux of the matter is that Everyone can afford to hire them. The rich elite hire college graduates.
The crux of the matter is that xenophobia will make everyone's life worse. I know people who are leaving Arizona not because of the illegals, but because every political or economic initiative is based on hate. Guns, illegals, police. What else is happening in Arizona? And costs for everything just keep going up. Social injustice has a huge price tag when you are trying to get rid of the people who lubricate the creaky capitalist machinery.
Bebert paints him as a RINO who just does not understand the issues. Well, Bebert, I think you need someone representing the Republican party who is more thoughtful and considerate of the issues. O'Donnell? Palin? The first apparently sought answers from witchraft, and the second gets hers from "all those magazines." So the GOP is still in good hands.
Colin Powell should start blogging. It would really help the GOP to think it still has a moderate wing left. It might also help Colin to understand that he needs to stop being associated with a party that has gone wacko.
And yes, Smith, your second comment is good too. Obama should have done more and faster. There would not be a deadlock now if Hillary had been his VP. Just has Hatoyama and Kan have done, he has frittered his mandate.

In all of that article, I cannot see one thing wrong with what he says, period. He is the most level-headed, respectable Republican left, hands down. The guy paid his dues and is beholden to no one. He is the conscience of the GOP.
A patient, wise, reasonable man. Good on him for not giving up on Bebert and crew even after they give up on him.
Watch this man GOP! If you want to take votes from the Dems, he will show you how to do it without lies and trickery. This man rallies people to the middle, not to the fringe.

Powell's existence proves the immense rightward shift in Republican politics: a few cycles ago, he was sought after; today, despite his consistency, he'd have as much a shot at the Republican nomination as Hillary. The Democrats will welcome the centrists aboard, though, and to the long-term detriment of the Republicans, no matter what the results of this November.

Ummmm......
He voted for and endorsed Obama over that 'radical right-winger' John McCain. Hardly respectable to the Republican left I'd say. As a matter of fact I think he left the Republican party period after that move. Or is actually announcing and voting for the other party's candidate the new way to show your dedication to your political beliefs?

Gives a heckuva powerpoint presentation too.

Powell, a moderate Republican, urged his party Sunday to support immigration generally because it is “what’s keeping this country’s lifeblood moving forward.”
Uh, riiiight, general. Not only do we support immigration we support it vociferously. All we ask is that it be legal.
His backassward strategy to paint conservatives as xenophobes is gonna backfire on him and his new found "progressive" best friends big time.

Heh, liberals live in a fantasy land where the "elites" -- whose past fame and notoriety and previous status and accomplishments -- makes them above the law.
Here in the real world, no matter his "fame" as a former General of the United States Army, it does not make Powell exempt from the U.S. laws.

The right is no longer a political thing. It's just hate mongering. Powell lays a little truth on everyone and a few of the racists here are ready with the noose.
How do you survive with so much hate in your hearts?

Hiring an illegal in the US even if its more like contract work between 2 people and one of them is illegal in the US is against the law, however though you have to be able to prove that the person doing the hiring knew before hand or during the employment of the illegal that the person they hired was illegal or else you can't charge the employer.

What a bunch of crap, Americans, legal ones will never do the dirty work that poor, underpaid, mistreated illegals from Mexico, El Salvador, Nigeria, you name the country, will ever do, Powell knows this as do most American company owners, that is why they do not waist their time trying to find lazy, fat American born people, who feel it is beneath them to work in construction, washing dishes, etc...

manfromamerica
That is the stupidest comment ever. Americans, and LEGAL immigrants, will work hard in any job. Typical liberal nonsense...

Why do people think Powell is relevant? He was useless as Sec of State, and he's even more useless now that he's unemployed.

What's that you say? There's an elephant in the room? I don't see him....

Oh yes, everyone who doesn't agree with Obama is a racist. And if they don't agree with Powell, then they're KKK.n This is the mentality of the Demos. Pretty pathetic. :-)

People should never have believed him when he went to the UN and demonstrated that Iraq has WMDs. Why should people believe him now?
0
manfromamerica
very good point!

lostrune, unfortunately you too are obviously a racist and have a noose. To prove you are not, you must agree with everything Powell says (because Powell agrees with Obama).

manfromamerica
Oops, now Powell says illegal immigrants do not do his home repairs, but maybe work on homes in his neighborhood...
And by the way, how are home repairs the "type of job that are too disgusting for Americans to do"?

Guess you missed Jon Stewart last month: Sorry, the race card is maxed out.
The "hate" charge is - - how can I put this? - - pretty weak tea these days. You could go with the old totalitarian standby, "The time for debate is over!" but that one now kind of reeks of old, privileged, establishment geezers - - senators' sons - - forcing themselves on defenseless and vulnerable women.
Got anything else?

Really? Is that why it is Americans, legal ones that are exclusively working in sewage treatment facilities, exclusively going into sewers, exclusively working in the garbage/waste industry?
You honestly believe that Americans find working in construction is degrading/beneath them? The primary reason why employers hire them is because they are willing to do the work for half the cost if not more. Washing dishes beneath them? Please tell that to every american who at home washes their dishes.
Americans are willing to do those jobs but they are not willing to do them for minimum wage, you can't raise a family on minimum wage, as much as the federal government loves to claim you can you can't. If your sick and tired of this view that Americans have then don't come to America illegally and if your currently in American illegally right now then leave, that is a statement to all potential illegals.
