What Mexico needs to do is stop trying to clean up Mexico via the police and instead get the people to do their own policing. The government needs to let the people know they are on their own, but give them the ideas and the authority to deal with the situation. Mexico needs a sort of martial law run by individual communities.

They would also do well to ask the U.S. for some help, even if just some raids by small squads of trained soldiers to take out cartel leaders and members.

Mexico also needs to legalize some drugs to get the people buying from govenment instead of cartels and implore the U.S. to do the same.

Good points Oracle. I worry about the neighbourhood policing though. In theory good, but that will just create little fiefdoms. Cleaning the police is impossible without cleaning the politicians first. The legalisation of drugs is the best idea, if it is done in a way like in parts of Europe where it is controlled and used in tandem with public services to wean addicts off.

Exactly. I should think that would be better than having people hung from bridges in broad daylight. I envision walled communities what a 24 guard that would take a small army to storm. It may sound medieval but its a better form of medieval than what they already seem to have. But even short of that, they need communities to pull together however they can.

@Oracle your last post seems to be the most likely solution given the situation thats going down there. Even if the prez Calderon could find un-corruptable police officers, its been obvious that the cartels will assassinate them when given the chance as they've done before.
