Pro-Tibet activists stage another protest in Beijing

BEIJING —

Pro-Tibetan independence activists staged another protest in Beijing on Friday, hanging a large ‘‘Free Tibet’’ banner outside the new state TV headquarters. Two climbers, a man and a woman, hung the banner over high fencing and billboards advertising the Olympic Games which surround the CCTV building in the center of the Chinese capital. A statement from the organizers of the protest, U.S.-based Students for a Free Tibet, said the 115-square-meter banner was put in place at about 5:45 a.m. and left for about half an hour before the two activists, a Briton and an Australian-Canadian citizen, were detained by police. Three Americans helping with the protest, two men and a woman, were also arrested, the statement said.

Sixteen people who have taken part in three protests organized by Students for a Free Tibet in Beijing over the past week to coincide with the Olympics have been thrown out of the country so far. A brief report in the official Xinhua News Agency said the police have already ordered the five activists in the latest protest to curtail their stay and leave the country. Lhadon Tethong, executive director of Students for a Free Tibet, said, ‘‘Tibet supporters took action at CCTV today to broadcast a message of truth about the intensifying military crackdown in Tibet and the Tibetan people’s undying resolve to regain their freedom.’’ ‘‘While the Chinese government has built a gleaming new building for its official mouthpiece and its public relations strategy has become more sophisticated, the propaganda it uses to maintain its iron-fisted control over Tibet remains the same,’’ she said.

These people have some serious cojones.

China should have been more diligent and infiltrated those organizations. Now the protesters are indistinguishable from tourists. Will be impossible to stop. They operate in a similar way to terrorist cells, not acting until they have to carry out their mission.

Even with tight security, there is so much free space in Beijing that you could get away with many things.
