Faulty Design is probably one of the worse case scenarios economically because it could mean replacing the engines on all A380s. A maintenance problem or foreign object damage would mean one off but design is fleet wide.

Airbus and Rolls Royce,can expect USA's Boeing and USA's GE to do better.

This news is bad economic PR for UK's Rolls Royce and EU's Airbus,in high quality expectations ,world of air transport.

Pleae do not start a US vs Europe slanging match, rajakumar. There have been turbine disc and fan failures with most companies' jet engines at some point. Yes it will be expensive, but that is the nature of the beast.

Each time something like this happens is a chance for all manufacturers to go back and recheck and redesign, to make air travel safer for everyone.

Look boys and girls... Got nothing to do with Boeing V's Airbus As much as QANTAS says it wasn't maintenance it WAS... they HAVE been cutting and cutting on maintenance... once a proud safe airline...as an Ozzie I wont fly on QANTAS or the even worse poor off-shoot JetStar...

But then again for the next 6 months maintenance on QANTAS will be almost perfect...all of the maintenance contractors will actually do the work they are required to do... until we all forget it

Boeing is better.

A Qantas 747 had to return to SIN again today because of engine problems.

In A380 case, perhaps engine from Engine Alliance is better than engine from Rolls Royce.

This is what I call an amateur's opinion. Qantas has just grounded a 747 due to malfuncioning. So it's a maintenance problem, is that clear now?

1. Engine maintanence on Quantas airplanes is perofrmed/oveseen by RR tech. reps.
  1. Boing also uses RR engines as well as GE.
That's one of the commercial advantages Boing has over Airbus in that they can buy engines from anyone whereas Airbus, because it's a European alliance, must use engines produced in Europe. In any case, this is not argument about Airbus vs. Boing. The reliability of the 747 is undeniable, they have been around for about 40 years and have a remarkable safety record. The jury is still out on the A380.
