Makes me think of the painting of Paddy Gallagher in the TV series, Shameless .

    What became of Kelly's head?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. Was the head separated from the body at the time he was executed, and if not, what led to its parting of the ways from the rest of the body?

Its a mixed tale, and anyone taking one side over the other I would say is a fool. There is no doubt that Kelly began as a violent troublemaker, but also, the authorities were corrupt and heavy handed. The misunderstandings between the two drove the whole bad situation. So did police foolishly drawing their weapons despite being cornered by Kelly. No sympathy for people that dumb even if they do wear a badge. All and all, I have to lean toward Kelly, but I stop short of hailing him a hero. His exploits are amazing, but the main skin he was focused on saving was his own. That is not heroism. And the authorities? They actually covered up information about Kelly that questions his treatment by them. What utter scum.

The armor that he wore, and that of three other gang members wore weighed nearly 100 pounds but deflected bullets. Some of the armor is on display, and you can see where bullets hit, but only dented it. And as is known, he was captured alive. But this is because he got shot in the legs, his only weak point.

You Aussies have a colorful history.

As do you Israelis. But I am American and I read about this story for interest in the armor a few years back. Knowing about my own country's famous outlaws definitely helped me see that the authorities are not people you automatically side with, but then, neither are outlaws.

Sorry, but this sounds like something from on of The Simpsons cartoon episodes, and then the ghost of old man XXXX comes back and haunts lil Bart Simpson, if Aussies like this kind of history, fine by me.

    Darren Brannan

He was of poor Irish stock and his family were heavily persecuted by the coppers and the wealthier squatters. To quite a large degree he was a victim of circumstance. His skull was displayed in Pentridge (?) gaol and somebody stole it in the late 1970's..it has not been found yet,but a skull that was found was the reason his remaining skeleton was found.Such is life.

Looks like he is wearing a burqha.

@Darren or do you mean, Such is death?! How gross. I think Ned Kelly was conveyed in ed as he was, neither too good nor too bad. Burqha eh? Well he was the only one wearing it, and his ID was that. And they still wanted him to take it off when arrested-so get over it, it never stated whether he was wearing eyeshadow underneath that though.
