"Rep Peter King, a New York Republican who called Jackson a “pervert, child molester, pedophile” in a video he posted on YouTube this week, vowed Tuesday to do “whatever I have to do” to oppose honoring Jackson."
King is just a bigot, and probably yet another Republican doing the opposite of what he preaches. Regardless, flagrant bigotry and hatred followed by a clear message that you're going to object to something is only going to give more support to it passing -- especially given the track record of Republicans lately.
I was going to say legislation for such hero worship is a bit silly, but after hearing what this nut Republican had to say I'm more in favour of it being realized.

whatever you might think of jackson, fact is he was never found guilty in a court of law. if he believes this then i hope he also has issue with the justice system because that is the only way he can rightly hold that view

Hey, I have a better idea, let's go in order. I'd like to put up Tito Puente before MJ. There is zero questions about him, never had an issue none what so ever and touched a lot people too.
I wonder if we'll do this for Madona once she goes too. She's pretty much due too!

Really, this is not what congress should be spending its time on right now.

whatever you might think of jackson, fact is he was never found guilty in a court of law." Neither were a whole lot of other people. Our system is screwed up, not sure if there is a better one out there, but I do know, quote unquote Jackson did say "sharing your bed with a kid is a beautiful thing to do". Are you going to let me sleep next to your kids?
Ok, maybe he said that under pressure. there are quite a number of reasons why I don't think congress should be spending time on this. I mean, come on, how many more stupid drug addicted actors, performers are we going to put up on a pedestal? Elvis was a junkie Marlyn Monroe was a druged out nympho Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Rick James, Kurt Kobon(whatever his name was)... do I need to go on?
And still no one has moved on bringing back Maimi Sound Machine!

Hm a Madonna day,hm I wonder what folks will have to wear on that holiday.....Hmmm
Actually Congress does this sort of thing all the time. But the only reason you never hear about it is because it is so bloody boring that no one cares. Well until now that is........
Always interesting how the far right goes overboard over a person that was never convicted. I wonder if it has to do with MJ's skin color? Hm nah the far righter's are not bigots...
I remember how they were right there helping to pass Martin Luther King's birthday as a nation holiday. Yep not one......Opps excuse me someone is calling me about this.......er...."what, what do you say?"..."Well that can not be, check your sources again..."...."Oh, ok, let me correct myself then"...
Sorry folks but I was just informed that many Republicans were against having MLK birthday as a national holiday. Still to this day many Republicans are opposed to that holiday.
So are far right wingers bigots? Well for that answer you choose.
As for MJ being honored, why not, he was never convicted of anything and did many good things.

JB, you mean to tell me if one is not hip to the idea that MJ deserves all this heavenly things, they are bigots? What's next? If I don't want to make a big deal out of say Elton John, I am being anti-gay?
As for MJ being honored, why not, he was never convicted of anything and did many good things." Again, there have been many many people not convicted of anything, yet you know in you heart, you know damn well they should have been (Police for example).

I respect him as an artist but I can think of a 100 other people that should be honored before him. Rep. Jackson Lee needs to take a number and get in line...

In this case I have to go with the GOP (for once). Honouring a child molester is just wrong.

Pukey2
People keep calling him a child molester, but the fact is he was found not guilty and most of us will never know the truth. He could have been or the accusers could just have been after money.
And as for the Republican politicians - they're the most hypocritical people on earth. They're just full of closeted gays (who actually make the lives of other gays a misery), bible-bashing money grabbers, who are having affairs half the time while promoting 'family values'. Quite a few Reps who criticized Bill Clinton were found to have had their own emabarassing skeletons in the cupboard!

Not really, but most of the time it is the far right that gets bent out of shape when someone who is off white gets an honor like this....Not always but most of the times.
Every State in the Union does the same thing as the Congress, take a look at some.
Paul Newman because he was a good actor http://www.wtic.com/pages/3917964.php?
Alabama State House Honors Carrie Prejean for opposing gay marriage http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2009/04/houseapprovesresolution_prai.html
Here's one honoring the Hubble Space Telescope for doing a great job.LOL http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=16768
Here's is one for the Conspiracy Theroist out there, this one Recognizes and honors the Freemasons...(turns on strange X-Files music)

How about the 2007 Boston Red Sox
www.house.gov/capuano/news/2007/pr110607.shtml
Congress does this all the time like I said. But only this time does it matter. Why? Well MJ was found not guilty and most far righter's think he was guilty. So it is not fair because they know it in their hearts of hearts that he may have done it. But the evidence was not enough to convict.
So if this passes and they give him this award just, get over it.
I myself am one of those that believes innocence till found guilty. But I see you do not follow that......Too bad, but oh well....

If George Tenet can get an honor from the president for his part in attacking Iraq, then Michael Jackson sure deserves a House resolution that “forever” honors the late pop star. < :-)

Pukey, I couldn't have said it better. I can't believe government officials are wasting their time on this.

I don't know that we need a government resolution to honor Michael Jackson but I don't know why anyone would be so bent on opposing it. Ben King is a hater and ranks up there in my book with Bashir, they can both rot in h*ll.

Joe,
It's really hard to argue with your last post. You nailed that one.
Michael Jackson's greatness as an entertainer cannot be questioned. I think a lot of people my age (40s) and older resent him a little because he was in the same league, and in some ways, surpassed, The Beatles.
I honestly believe that some people take issue with that, along with the plastic surgery and the eccentricity.
However, none of that factors in my decision to oppose this resolution. It's important to remember our past and honor those of greatness, but in this case, there is plenty of private money available to do so. With the economy the way it is now, I just don't see where this is a necessary government expenditure.

This is the same Sheila Jackson Lee who, during a 2005 visit to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, asked whether the Mars Pathfinder had taken an image of the flag planted on Mars by Neil Armstrong in 1969. :-D
That pretty much says it all.

This passing resolutions on everything on my tax dollar time is really getting out of hand.

I myself am one of those that believes innocence till found guilty." JB, look man, I am sure I could list a billion cases where a person was found not guilty, and then a re-trial where not guilty... Watch Ghosts of Mississippi. Don't give me he was found not guilty, he paid off his accuser. I am not saying he did but NOR will I say he didn't. I am talking about his sick direct quote that should bump him off. It can not be defended.
Taka: When have we ever honored the Beatles? I hated them! Was John Lennon, who I believe did a few "nice" things that were considered good, honoured? BTW, their music was awful!
Moderator: Stay on topic please. This isn't about the Beatles.

Was he unanimously found 'Not Guilty', or was he not found 'Guilty' owing to a split in the jury? Can anyone remember?
