NYC taxi "medallions" are very expensive -sometimes a million dollars+. = NYC taxi drivers are professionals and not a joke. To get the medallion is very serious business and you do not want to lose it.

As of January 2015, medallion prices have dropped considerably, likely due to competition from ride-share services like Uber and Lyft, dropping by around $500,000 in value by 2016, from a peak of 1.3m down to around 500-700,000.
