Europe can thank Ukraine for their loss in gas due to thefts. < :-)

This is one way to lower green house gases. The Ukraine should never give in to Russian thugs! People are just going to have and heat their homes, etc but another means and the stoppage is going to COST Russia a lot! The only ones suffering are EU countries. They are paying the price for trusting Russia! They should of done something 3 years ago. They never learn..

All parties should meet to make interim deal first and follow through for the resolving gas woes via more meets and dialogues.
If there is gas from Russia, why do not buy it,no point it staying in Russia.

It would be nice to see the EU, instead of caving into Russia demands to pay more money for it's Gas then it is actually, to find alternative forms of energy and punish Russia for thinking it is the Soviet Union that can just bully it's way into getting what it wants. This and the added bonus of becoming more environmentally friendly.

Russia is insane. Medvedev doesn't understand it is very possible for people to be frozen to death.

This a wonderful opportunity for countries to use their heads and find alternative energy.
Headlines tomorrow: Gazprom lays off thousands...
If this happens watch out Canada...

Another great reason to produce more alternate power and to be able to get away from foreign oil. < :-)

adaydream - Actually, there is no evidence of any theft by Ukraine, and every appearance that Russia is escalating both the situation and the propaganda. Let us only hope that Russia is not attempting to create an excuse to invade Ukraine.
The clear lesson for all Europe, including Ukraine, is that dependence on Russian energy is costly in many ways.

Putin is not insane, he knows very well that people will freeze. He just doesn't care.
And yes, that wasn't a type-o. We all know who is running this show.

Doesn't really matter what Medvedev thinks, as it's Putin that calls the shots (even though he's "only" the prime minister).

Invasion of the Ukraine is an attack against NATO and the United States. Russia does not have the military forces to attack the west. The best they can do is freeze civilians in the EU who in less than a week are already cold and out of supplies. A complete lack of planning on these "intelligent" democratic countries. They are going to have to make communal warming center and perhaps beds in the schools warmed by electric space heaters. Again they are in this position from their trust in the Russian. This is a good reason to reject Russian oil supplies. If a pipeline was built to Japan and reliance occurred they could and would blackmail Japan. It has happened before and will happen again!

The sleeping bear is awake I see. Gasprom is Putin's replacement for the Red Army as a weapon of intimidation against Europe. Scary stuff but not unexpected.

Ukraine is not yet a member of NATO but has asked to join. I would bet that this is one of the reasons that Putin is pushing this issue now. And yes, I could believe that Putin would use a pretext to send troops in to "guard" the pipeline.
The Ukrainian position of "you want more for the gas, we want more fees for shipping it across Ukraine" is reasonable and they have the Russians in a spot as much as the Russians have the EU in a spot. Note that the Ukrainians have a pretty good stockpile. They expected this. Russia is using pressure on the EU to try to get the EU to force Ukraine to cave in. If the EU is smart they will remember what happened the last time they gave in to a dictator.

The Ukraine must be upset they gave up their nukes. This is showing to be a stupid decision. The only thing that keeps the Russian Bear at check is force. What promise of support did the Ukraine receive when it disarmed the nukes within its borders? Being defenseless against ones foes is a sin that brings about its own punishment. How can the Ukraine protect its territory against Russian aggression to secure the Gas pipelines within its borders? Also why don't the "intelligent" Europeans have a natural gas reserve? It has only been a week and that are suffering.

YuriOtani :
I can see that you are not familier with European geography. What you call "Intelligent Europeans" are in fact the poor ex-east countries. (Bulgaria, Tchch, Hangary etc.) They don't have any othe alternative than to depend on the good old USSR time relationship. They don't have the money and technology to get the alternative energy. Have you ever been to Europe???
I noticed that you have a very simple vision of the world. For you, "Europeans" are all the same as well as "Arabs". You need to learn more if you want to make a credible comment.

FromEurope, most of the EU countries are in trouble in less than a week. I used my phrase since so many Europeans think they are better than Americans. Soon they will be protesting against the new US President. I have been to Europe was never made to feel welcome there. Being not one thing or the other usually brought a bunch of condescending remarks if any. Even trying my lousy German or French got only stares. What I think is odd is the EU talked with Russia and they both tried to double team the Ukraine into submission. About this poor eastern Europe stuff, it has been 18 years since the collapse of the Soviet Union. There has been enough time but the EU lacks the willpower to get out from under the Russian Bear. They talk a good talk but when the going gets tough. I have been to the middle east as well.
