Serves them right. Frankly, how can you stick your thumb into the eye of the guy who's supplying you your gas at a cheap price so brazenly?

Right?

They didn't pay their debts and expect their supplier to continue to provide whats essentially free gas to them?

Compromise? Why should anyone compromise about this? This isn't about debt solutions or consolidation. The nation of Ukraine owes a debt to Russia while they are in a military conflict with each other. No one owes Ukraine any courtesy on compromise. No money, no gas. This is the same everywhere on earth.

So Russia is going to cut off the gas supply to Russian speakers in the Ukraine?

Ukraine should fill up its reserves and prepare to cut off the EU. Why should the Ukraine provide transit for Russian gas exports to the EU for free? Perhaps they should put charges on the gas pipelines to keep them from falling to the Russian military.

Possibly a bad move by Putin. If Europe/NATO can come up with the coin, then Ukraine will actually bolt.

Not a great loss. You have to remember if the old government can still play off the West vs Russia to some extent, this new one effectively owes its survival and legitimacy at all levels to Western support (i.e. Russophobia).
