This is going to end badly....for China.

This is an opportunity for South Korea and Japan to work together. China's ADIZ is way too big, honestly.

Sir_Edgar: "This is an opportunity for South Korea and Japan to work together."

True, but in all honesty I'd say it's more likely an opportunity for SK and China to negotiate. They both have a common "enemy" in Japan with regards to land disputes and hatred towards Japan's colonial rule and blatant white-washing of history, so it could very well end up that China gives SK a little wiggle room and neither nation give Japan any. It would be nice if SK were to work with Japan on this, but given tensions of late, I don't see it happening.

All China has to do is yell "Boo!" and SK will go running to its protector Uncle Sam.

I guess you haven't seen the size of Japan's ADIZ and EEZ

Like Japan already has?

Pukey: "I guess you haven't seen the size of Japan's ADIZ and EEZ"

Very good point, and more reason why China has a little bit of truth behind their statement that Japan has no right to criticize their ADIZ.

I am gonna announce my own damn ADIZ stretching from above my apartment to across to street as it seems anyone can do this sort of crap now

You know what ? God Bless South Korea, they have proven that there is alot of noise but nothing really to fear. No one is going to war, maybe a slight skirmish, someday, I've said before it may do each side some good to fire a few rounds down range, or over the bow, so to speak, just to keep the others honest, maybe they could hold joint war games or something, but truly there is a rough kind of tranquility going on, no matter what others may have tried to railroad it. Happy Holidays in Asia, everyone, never mind the bluster. Christmas came early-Peace on the seven seas†

In the future, Taiwan may extend her ADIZ too, I do not blame Taiwan and SK extension of their zone. They have been sandwiched between unreasonable and stubborn neighbors. Japan has extended twice before 2013. When Japan extended, PRC,Taiwan and SK did not make noise.

Japan is smaller than Montana state. Japan ADIZ is five times larger than Montana.

Sir Edgar is right. And smith is as usual wrong.

"On Wednesday, the Korea Joongang Daily reported that, “The Korean Navy yesterday launched a joint sea and air military drill near the waters surrounding Ieodo” Rock. The report said the drill consisted of two P-3C maritime patrol aircraft as well as one of the ROK Navy’s three Aegis destroyers. The destroyer reportedly anchored around 200 meters from Ieodo, which both South Korea and China claim but Seoul administers. The Korea Joongang Daily report also said that the two P-3Cs, which are used in anti-submarine operations as well as for maritime surveillance, crossed into Japan’s ADIZ with the prior approval of Tokyo. This fact suggests that South Korea and Japan are boosting their cooperation in the wake of China unilaterally declaring the East China Sea ADIZ two weekends ago"

You might as well. It would have as much legitimacy as China's.

While you're at it, claim the local izakaya and beer vending machines as your inherent territory because you walked past them on your way home from work.

It seems CN's not mad at all regarding this issue (pls refer to China daily news below), so this issue is only between CN & JP.

( Xinhua )Updated: 2013-12-08 14:12:35 On ROK's attempt to expand its air defense identification zone, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a regular media briefing Friday that the move should be in line with its national laws and international norms. Hong said an ADIZ was not part of a country's territorial airspace and had nothing to do with the administrative rights over sea and airspace. "We are ready to maintain communication with the ROK side under the condition of equality and mutual respect," Hong said.

Why should China be mad? every country has a right to ADIZ, China has already told US you are not our direct enemy, our beef is with Japan, not US or SK.

If China thinks that the United States actually believes that China's "beef" is only with Japan then they are seriously fooling themselves. Since 2002 China has declared an intent to "oust the US from the western pacific" and replace it as the dominant strategic power in the region. Everything they are doing in the East and South China Seas are designed to slowly erode US influence.

That is the view China wants to present. In truth they are shocked that South Korea and Japan have aligned militarily on this issue, an objective that they have continued to stop by stressing anti-Japan sentiment, and leveraging the fact that South Korea relies far more on China for it's economy than an other developed Asian country. Yosun, all Chinese media is a mouthpiece for the CCP government, Whatever you find there does not tell you the truth or even what's going on, it tells you what the Chinese government wants you to believe. Whatever you believe that does not correspond with their thinking is "groundless" and "incorrect thinking".

As predicted of S. Korea, it happened. The loophole in the international aviation protocol is bigger than the black hole, so these nations hide behind the semantic rule and claimed to follow the flaw charters. Japan is surrounded and the key to her survival is to be strong and prepared. Japan should demand the world community participation in resolve this issue. If diplomatic effort bears no result, it is time to clarify the new ADZ as it sees fit with rightfully in doing so.

OssanAmerica, the only ones who are mad at this move are the Japanese internet commentators who are going absolutely nuts right now, demanding Japan end all diplomatic relations with S.Korea and putting on economic sanctions. Everyone else is silent. S.Korea politely explained to both governments of China and Japan, its wish to avoid any clashes. South Korea's true position is that all it wants to do is to survive amongst the whales without getting hurt. South Korea's ADIZ is still very small compared to China's and Japan's which are getting bigger each year.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

@Zenpun I don't see your point. Montana is not a country, it is a state within a country, and is protected by one of the US's four ADIZ. I notice that no-one seems to take issue with the US having multiple ADIZ instead of just one like everyone else. Every country's ADIZ is bigger than the country itself, so your point is null and void.

I'm not honestly surprised that South Korea would expand their ADIZ now of all times, but I wonder how it'll affect the tension in the region, if it does at all. The issue at hand seems to be mostly between Japan and China, so hopefully SK's expansion will be largely ignored. If only China's ADIZ had been less provocative and more reasonable with the rules of operating within it, then maybe that would have been largely ignored as well, and there wouldn't be as much tension. I'd like to stress the "as much" part in case someone has a go at me. I am aware that tension is unavoidable and prexisting between the two nations, but China's new ADIZ inflamed those tensions.

On a side note, this whole dispute has made doing research damn near impossible. I tried looking up the UK ADIZ on Google. All of the 500,000 or so results were actually discussions about the new Chinese and South Korean ADIZ. I know the UK has an ADIZ, I just know nothing more than that. I can't seem to find any information on it anywhere.
