South Korea's safety standards are probably more trustworthy than what the Japanese public have of their own government's. It is also slightly less prone to earthquakes than Japan. Even then, however, public distrust of nuclear power is quite understandable. One can only hope that the economic benefits and efficiency afforded by nuclear power is worth the risk for S.Korea. I wish them all the best.

giving NK more targets to hit...

International environmental group Greenpeace, a vocal critic of the country’s nuclear power programme, said it was ironic that South Korea started building two new reactors on the eve of Tokyo shutting down its own reactors.

No, it's not ironic. It's a reflection of different public attitudes. Japan is shutting down their reactors because the public doesn't trust the government to properly monitor the power companies and make them correct problems when they arise. Not so in South Korea.

Reactors are a huge mistake, as proven by the spread of radiation from past and current nuclear disasters. Examine, study, learn the facts. The data is a few clicks away.

vinnyfav, have you ever driven a Korean car? They have similar problems as Japan. The new plants should be among the safest on Planet.

South Korean public is clueless on problems with nuclear waste. South Koreans should be seriously concerns about where all of the waste generated from its nuclear plants should go. What to do with the South Korean nuclear waste has been an ongoing problem for years. To wit, the South Korean government has yet to select a high-level waste repository site. And if the time and money it took to decide upon a location for its low-level waste is any indication, it will be almost impossible to do so anytime soon. All the while, the space in temporary storage pools at the country's reactor sites is filling up. Maybe the solution is to send these nuclear waste to North Korea.

Had a read up on two Korean news sites today and it struck me how afraid the authorities are there that the public might turn against NP as in Japan. They seem to be watching developments in Japan closely and learning how to keep the Korean public quiet.

So can we now see the antinuclear freaks joint the uyoku thugs and demonstrate against Korea? That will be a picture to behold...
