Hahahaha. With all due respect to S. Korea, I have a feeling Obama might oppose an Obama-Kim Jong Il summit.

if it helps bring an end to Pyongyang’s nuclear program" The only thing that should help Pyongyang's nuclear program is Pyongyang. REally, look at those words. Like a Junkie who says someone needs to help him kick the habit.

Oh crxp off, the only way I would like Obama to meet Kim Jong Ill is if the later were doing a John the Baptist impersonation.
South Korea should also toughen its stance towards the North. North Korea's possession of (piddling) weapons of mass destruction make it more of legitimate target for invasion than a certain Middle Eastern country. Put on top of this the issue of human rights, and ask yourself is North Korea a country that can be negotiated with? There is also the issue of the kidnapping of foreign nationals (South Koreans, Eastern Europeans, Japanese, maybe even Americans), and you want to deal with this crowd? And what about the little issue of drug manufacturing and counterfiet currency? Geez, the leader of the country doesn't even look like Elvis despite his perchant for jumpsuits.
To put it bluntly, North Korea is definitely off the Christmas Card list and should stay that way until either hell freezes over or the Cubs win the World Series. Whichever comes first (it is feeling a bit cold lately).

Heck, if North Korea got off the list of countries sponsoring terrorism and got food aid with the Bush administration, just think what they're gonna get with the Obama administration! They must be salivating...

Don't follow the logic of your post Sarge, I think North Korea got a real axse-kissing from Comrade George. Let's face it, North Korea rattles it saber and then detonates (or tries to detonate) an atomic weapon, and what does Comrade George do,he invades Iraq! Now, I might not be the smartest grunt in the world, but even I know that North Korea and Iraq are miles away from each other (and a million miles from Texas).
Then again, what could one really expect from a person so widely traveled as Comrade George. I seem to remember that he didn't notch up many international frequent flier miles before becoming President. This might explain is erratic foreign policy of the last 8 years, alienating old allies (even the French), propping up dictatorships of effite ex-pats (Afghanistan and Iraq), and generally snubbing his nose at the international community.
On the other hand, I have a sneaking suspicion that Obama might be able to intimidate the world's worst Elvis impersonator (Kim Jong Ill). Then again, I might just be getting caught up in the melodrama that is the new President - Elect.

I don't know whether Obama will end up meeting with Kim Jong Il and I don't really care. Kim Jong Il has never negotiated in good faith so I can't see why we should clock all those hours on Airforce One for what will prove to be a waste of time.

no defense of the NK regime itself - but for a country, which averted nuclear wipe-out just by accident, which is still officially in war and which has rather aggressive neighbors it's not really surprising to become paranoid and follow a strategy of deterrence. Building up trust is the most effective if not only way to stop NK from continuing their nuclear weapons program. Direct talks between Obama and Kim Jong Il can only help and are certainly not a waste of time, although I wouldn't hold my breath for immediate tangible results.

they say Kim Jong 2 has had another stroke (TBS) -but NK is denying it.

Obama may give a lot more goodies to north korea in return for more peace/goodies from north korea. President obama will bring on more peace to north koreans.
They already got energy aid, food aid and got of the terrorist list. They will only get more via more peaceful Obama.
