They are in the same position that we are. You can talk a good game about cutting taxes for a period of time, but it's got to be replenished. These tax dollars are already spoken for in Federal/Local programs. If it's not collected here, they will collect it from somewhere else, or do without services.
We bloody shouldn't be. If an econmoist can explain to me how despite the rising price of oil, the price is based in dollars and the dollar is on it's arse compared to the Euro so the price surely shouldn't have shot up...?
Also, the fact-cats in Euro governments, notably Britain have long been stuffing themselevs with something crazy like 80 odd % tax on fuel.
It's time to prepare an brace for French panic buying, and block the fuel arrivals again to bring the government to its' knees on this issue...
I'm not surprised you know absolutely nothing about Europe in light of the shriekfest blogs you hang out, but if you're going to make degrading comments about Europeans, at least have the back-bone to defend them!
"But for France just to cut the gasoline taxes means, that money will have to be replaced somehow."
Well, if Sarko get's his reforms through, we'll be cutting off some of the excess flab via less government "workers". If he nips the RMI in the bud too, and finally does something about the crippling social charges us small business pay we could finally get back on our feet.
The fuel crisis is the tip of the iceberg - it's 25 years of socialist ruin that needs to be dealt with first.
The oil reserves are controlled by certain magnets that have turned it into a monopoly to steal the money from the world to their pockets.
A great portion of these taxes are used to keep up hiways. If these taxes aren't collected where do the funds come from to fix the hiways? You can't take school funds and fix hiways. You can't take military funds and fix hiways. It's just not that easy.
These links only show a small fraction of the truth.

Now there's a novel idea. Let's cut spending on the vote-buying entitlement programs! They are in the same position we are, right? Just worse.
