Heh, I've said a few things about women drivers over the years, but lashing seems a bit barbaric.

The Saudi monarchy living like fat pigs whilst the populace live in abject shiite need to speed up the reforms unless they want to fuel an uprising too.

...King Abdullah ... decreed that women would be allowed to participate in municipal elections in 2015....

In related news, the kingdom announced that, in order to prevent voter fraud, a drivers license will be required to vote.

I hereby sentence the righteous clerics, who sentenced this woman to 10 lashes, to 20 lashes.

"the powerful clergy"

Who died and made them God?

this is what happens when you mix religion and politics

That is what happens when you make medieval God`s law the law of the country...

Europeans should pay attention.

It's not exactly a Captain Bligh-style lashing with a cat o'nine tails, it is more of a ritual humiliation; the whipper must keep a copy of the Koran wedged between his arm and his body, preventing large strokes.

Still one step forward, two steps back for women in Saudi Arabia. Progress: Saudi -style...

Do I agree with it? No Do I think it's any of my business or the USA's business? No. I think they are slowly moving in a democratic way, allowing women to vote and rather than praise them, we've blasted them and highlighted how women can't drive!! If I was the Saudi king I'd reverse the decision on voting and state it is because the US can't keep it's damn mouth shut and stay out of our internal affairs. They are moving in the right direction, leave the criticism out of it.

In Saudi Arabia, you need a driver's license to drive. To get a driver's license, you have to be a male. Do the males do the shopping then? The women are not allowed to drive, on the other hand they're allowed to become suicide bombers. Isn't it unfair?

Europeans should pay attention?

To what Willi?

I'm sat here thinking lashing a woman for driving is pretty barbaric, comfortably I might add, in a laic European country that puts foot to ass everytime that a fundie noise-maker of this particular religion raises it's ugly head.

Fear-mongering about Europe and Islamic conquest fantasies detracts from the plight a brave women to be lashed for driving, and more to the point, much needed peacefull activism in medieval lands.

LOL. I suppose it's the current fad to blame the U.S. for everything - even things it hasn't done. There's nothing in this article that relates to an American response to the sentence. So perhaps it's time to "leave the criticism" of the U.S. "out of it" as well?

Oil and money does not speed evolution! The Saudis are still an "ancient" culture who just happen to have modern luxuries.

Knuckle draggers.

They can't keep a good gal down forever.

I guess all the male Saudi diplomats and embassy employees must be seething with rage every time they see a female driving a car in every other country.

Sickening. Monarchies and religion are a sure way to keep people oppressed.
