Copernicus was not the first to think that the Earth was not the center of the universe. He was the first to scientifically prove that it was quite possible the Earth was not so, and did it at a time when such ideas were potentially dangerous to one's health. So hats off to him. And a little smack to the religious types.
I am usually very skeptical of archaeologists' "theories" but in this case I feel they have proved it from enough angles that they must be correct.
